Rationale for assessment task
This assessment task supports you to be an effective Bystander in the workplace and will hopefully extend beyond this. It is a requirement that healthcare workers are Culturally Safe practitioners. Part of this is when we witness culturally unsafe practice, that we have the skills to navigate this and bring change to the workplace setting.
Case study
You are doing a clinical placement on a busy medical ward, and you are working with a Registered Nurse (RN). Both of you attend to Hayma (aged 36 years) who suffered a Thoracic (T11) vertebral injury at the age of 18 years and is being admitted for investigation of a stomach ulcer. Hayma is seated in her wheelchair on arrival and is accompanied by her uncle Arkar. As Hayma and her family follow Theravada Buddhism faith, they eat a vegetarian diet. Other than the impacts of her spinal injury, Hayma is able to self-manage her activities of daily living and communicate well, having lived in Australia since the age of 25 years when her family arrived as refugees from Myanmar. She has permanent damage to her heart as she has a history of severe rheumatic heart disease. The RN assumes that Hayma is unable to communicate for herself and talks only to her uncle who is in attendance for admission. The RN turns to face Hayma’s Uncle Arkar and makes the following comment, “Hello there – 2 © University of Southern Queensland who do we have here today?
Thanks for bringing Hayma in for her admission. How long has she been unwell for? Do you know? I have her chart here with me and just want to ask you some questions about her medical history if that’s OK? It says something here about her needing some kind of special diet we’ll need to sort that out, because she’s going to eat proper food you know!” After completing Hayma’s admission, you walk back to the nurse’s station with the RN. The RN turns to you and states “What a weird religion stops you from eating normal food – no wonder she has stomach problems. She probably just needs a decent steak! Do you hear that about having had rheumatic fever – people need to take better care of their health.”
