The essay examines how historical acts and contemporary policies as well as climate change have contributed to the increased prevalence either oral, hearing or vision concerns in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health has been impacted by governmental policies with these continuing to influence their health and well-being. Healthcare workers need to understand the increasing burden of disease experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Objective

1. Examine historical Acts and contemporary policies that have impacted the health of Indigenous Australians.

2. Explain Social and Emotional Wellbeing as defined by Indigenous health practitioners and examine the impact of Caring for Country and the Climate Emergency on the Social and Emotional Wellbeing of First Nations Australians.

3. Apply understanding of cultural safety and contextual knowledge and skills to deliver culturally safe healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culturally safe healthcare systems.

Task information

1. Develop a poster (1 power point slide) on one (1) of the following health concern impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples:

• Oral health concern: tooth decay
• Hearing health concern: hearing loss due to otitis media
• Vision concern: trachoma

The poster should provide information on the selected health concern: • Signs and symptoms

• How it can be prevented
• Treatment

The language should be accessible and respectful to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples: consider the use of images and the language used.

2. Discussing the following in relation to your selected health concern:

• Identifies the health concern included in the developed poster.

• Describe the selected health concern including signs and symptoms and examine the impact on the social and emotional well-being of those affected.
