Brief

Develop an educational poster – provides information on a selected health concern.

Essay examining how historical acts and contemporary policies and the climate emergency have contributed to the increased prevalence of the selected health concern (hearing, cardiovascular or skin concerns) in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health has been impacted by governmental policies with these continuing to influence their health and well-being. Healthcare workers need to understand the increasing burden of disease experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Task 1

Develop a poster on one (1) of the following health concerns impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples:

• Hearing health concern: hearing loss related to otitis media
• Cardiovascular health concern: myocardial infarct (MI)
• Skin concern: scabies

The poster should provide information on the selected health concern:

• Signs and symptoms
• How it can be prevented
• Treatment

The language should be accessible and respectful to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples: consider the use of images and the language used.

You must include a minimum of two (2) in-text citations on the poster (the references must be included in the reference list of the essay).

Task 2

Write a word essay discussing the following in relation to your selected health concern: Introduction

• Identifies the health problem included in the developed poster. Main body (see individual word counts for this section)
• Describe the selected health concern, including the causes of the signs and symptoms; and examine the impact on the social and emotional wellbeing of those affected by the health concern
• Analyse how specific historical acts and contemporary policies, as well as the climate emergency have contributed to the increased prevalence of the selected health concern in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These should be correlated with the social determinants of health and social and emotional wellbeing. 
• Critically discuss how and why the provision of culturally safe healthcare and culturally safe healthcare systems can reduce the prevalence of the selected health concern amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
