Part 1: Video Presentations

In Part 1, you are required to view a number of research video presentations to illustrate how you might go about undertaking a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity. Your ‘professional development’ is exercised through critiquing the videos.

CPD is a requirement of all registered health practitioners (AHPRA, 2016). The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) states that “CPD is the means by which members of the professions maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities needed throughout their professional lives” (NMBA, 2020, p. 1).

Examples of CPD activities include attending “conferences, forums, seminars and symposia” and “self-directed learning” (NMBA, 2020, p. 2). The NMBA describes the CPD requirements in the Registration Standards, and state the number of hours practitioners must spend each year on learning activities.

You are required complete a workbook entry for three of the video presentations. The research presentations for this activity are located in the Research Presentations folder in the NUR131 Blackboard site. Each Workbook entry should be approximately 150 words and must address the following criteria:

• • Date you listened to the presentation

  • Name of the presenter

  • Title of the presentation

  • Description of topics covered during research presentation

  • Reflection on presentation and its application to your future practice

Part 1 is worth 36 marks of the total percentage mark for Assessment Task 2. 12 marks per presentation x 3 presentations = 36 marks. 160 words per presentation x 3 = 480 words.

Part 2: Journal Article

In Part 2, you are required to critically appraise a research article. The workbook template (included on BlackBoard) includes the question areas that MUST be answered for this assessment task.

You are required to critique the journal article. Demonstrate your understanding of the article by explaining your answers in your own words. Do not use direction quotations, as this only demonstrates that you can find information, but not necessarily understand a concept. Simple yes/no answers are not adequate responses.

Your course textbook and tutorial learning materials provide detailed instruction on how to undertake a critique of a journal article. Your critique should be approximately 1000 words.
