Consider the next stage of your transition from student to a graduate registered nurse. During this transition, the stages of reality shock can become real. The case study provided shares one example where you would need to respond to a situation and develop strategies for the future. This requires personal growth, resilience and adaptation.

Case Study 1

 Anna’s second rotation during her graduate year is to an operating theatre in a large tertiary hospital. When acting as ‘scout’ in the neurosurgical theatre, she accidently leans on and contaminates the sterilised instrument tray. The neurosurgeon shouts at her; the Scrub nurse asks him to calm down and immediately sets about organising a replacement instrument tray with Anna’s assistance. Anna is observably shaken but continues with her shift. She is quiet and remains in the corner of the theatre away from risk of further issues arising. She feels out of her comfort zone as her first placement was in a general surgical unit where most of her time was spent caring for patients post operatively. The theatre environment is so new that Anna doesn’t know if she wants to continue. The RN notices Anna’s reaction following the incident. The surgical procedure continues and once the patient leaves the theatre for recovery, the Scrub Nurse quietly asks Anna to spend some time with her. She sits down privately with Anna and gently takes her through a reflection of the situation.
