Introductions

Nurses need to be lifelong learners. Once leaving the academic environment, much of your  learning will need to be personally developed. The PLP is designed to help you start looking to  your own ongoing learning needs. To maintain registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia  (NMBA), you will be expected to develop and maintain a continuing professional development  (CPD) portfolio that outlines your ongoing development of knowledge, expertise and competence. 

 

The PLP follows a similar process as that recommended by the NMBA:  

  • Identify learning needs 
  • Develop a learning plan 
  •  Participate in learning activities 
  •  Measure the outcome. 
  •  Supply evidence
  • Professional Learning Plan Structure 
  • Identifying Learning Goals 

 

  • The learning plan commences with identifying learning goals. For the purposes of this plan, we will focus  on your final semester of study (i.e. before your register). 

 

Choose two (2) learning goals 
 

  •  Align these with the RN competency standards 
  • Provide a rationale for each learning need 

 

  • Why is it important for a graduate nurse to have these skills  
  • Why do you personally need to develop knowledge in this area? 
  • What is your current knowledge level? 
  •  Why have you not developed this knowledge already? 

 

Action Plan 

 

  • Develop a plan to meet each of your learning goals 
  •  Set SMART objectives (with rationale) to meet these learning goals (minimum 2 per goal) o How will these objectives help you meet your learning goals? 
  • Describe the activities you will undertake to meet these objectives 
  •  Why will these activities help you achieve your objectives? 
  •  What resources will you use and why are they appropriate? 
  •  How will you evaluate your learning? 

 

Learning Log 

 

 

  • Discuss how you undertook each activity? 
  •  Reflect on how this activity improved your learning (or did it?) 
  •  How will this activity improve your clinical practice? 
  • Focus should be on what you learned, not what you did. 
  • Evidence (not included in word count) 

 

You will need to demonstrate evidence of your action plan. This can include (but is not limited to: 

 

  • Reflective journal (sample supplied) 
  •  Relevant learning/articles/etc. 
  •  Examples of evaluation tools.
