Reflective Writing Assignment:

Task: Assessment Task 1: Clinical Placement (HURDLE) Purpose: Clinical placement is an important component of the program, allowing students the opportunity to develop skills and integrate theoretical knowledge within nursing practice. The clinical areas are chosen for the many and varied experiences they offer students to build upon the knowledge, skills and values gained across the program. Completion of the theoretical and clinical learning requirements of the program is essential to be eligible for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia, Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Assessment Task 2: Clinical Skill Assessment (40% of overall course grade) Purpose: This assessment task assesses the application of both individual clinical reasoning skills and provision of peer feedback on the given clinical skills. Students are assessed on their individual performance. To promote reflective learning students are also required to submit a critical written reflection carried out upon their individual performance of the clinical skill as a means to further enhance their learning. The purpose of this assessment task is not focused on skill perfection alone, but also upon the student’s ability to develop capacity as an independent reflective practitioner; a key element of professional practice as set out in the NMBA standards. This assessment task is therefore divided into three parts. Part 1: Performing the allocated clinical skill Students will be allocated into groups of three (3). Each group of students will be allocated three skills to complete within their group. Every student will individually perform one skill. The skills will be randomly allocated to individual group members as you enter the labs at the time of assessment. Part 2: Providing Peer Feedback: Each student will provide verbal peer feedback after completion of the skill. Students will have two (2) minutes to provide constructive feedback to their peer. Please refer to the following marking guide for the criteria for providing peer feedback. It is required that ALL students will take turn in providing the feedback. Part 3: Critical reflection: Each student will submit a written 750-1000 word critical reflection on performing the allocated skill. It is most important that students begin to appreciate that a reflection is much more than simply a narration of what was done or not done. In the context of clinical reasoning, a critical reflection is your thoughts on what was done and what improvement is required for being a more effective and safe practitioner in your future practice. In order to facilitate this process, students should follow the Gibb’s Reflective Cycle. The written critical reflection needs to be an individual piece of work by each student. Even though the same or similar elements may be discussed in the reflection it must be submitted in each student’s own words. Assessment Task 3: Clinical Scenario Test (60% of overall course grade) Purpose: The two-hour test will comprise of content covered in each Module of the course. The purpose of this assessment task is to examine student’s clinical reasoning skills applied to clinical scenarios.
