Highlights
Task:
Description: This assessment task allows students to demonstrate the application of theoretical knowledge around the diverse population of young people. Students are required to answer the case scenario questions provided. Students should attempt all questions in the case study:
...You are working in a primary health clinic that often receives referrals from the school nurse at the local high school. Cassie is a 17-year-old year 12 student, who presents at the clinic concerned that a wound on her inner thigh might be infected and was also seeking advice on anxiety and housing options. The first thing you do is help Cassie feel comfortable by explaining how the clinic works, what services could be provided, the limitations of confidentiality and record keeping.
You take a full health history, including how the injury occurred. Cassie admits that the wound was self- inflicted and that she frequently cuts herself to release the stress she feels building up inside of her.
On taking the medico-psychosocial history, it was revealed that Cassie had a difficult relationship with her mother, with her mother constantly threatening to have Cassie removed from the home. This created a difficult atmosphere for Cassie at home, making it impossible to study for her Year 12 exams.
Young people are usually considered a healthy group, yet there are many factors that affect morbidity and mortality in this group.
1. Based on the case scenario above and for youth in general, highlight three (3) relevant social determinants or factors that may be affecting youth mental health. Link with relevant literature to support your discussion. (450 words)
It can be scary for anyone to walk into a health service but may be more so for many young people.
2. Discuss two (2) relevant barriers to accessing health services for a young person. Support your discussion with literature. (350 words)
3. Explain three (3) examples of ways you as the youth health nurse can provide considerate health care for Cassie? (400 words)
Cassie’s wounds can be approximated with Steri-strips and dressed with a waterproof dressing. Cassie needs further education and advice about how to care for her skin wounds.
4. Create a one-sided A4 pamphlet outlining relevant patient-centred education and advice regarding wound care to provide to Cassie. The pamphlet should at least include daily care, what changes to observe for and when to seek help. The pamphlet should be targeted at Cassie to ensure she understands her discharge care. You may use diagrams and pictures to engage the reader- these must be referenced appropriately. (Equivalent 300 words)
