Purpose:
This assessment task assesses the application of individual clinical reasoning skills in a given clinical scenario simulation. Students are assessed on their individual performance during a team managed advanced clinical simulation. Psychomotor skills will be assessed in relation to how they are applied within the context of the scenario. To promote reflective learning students are also required to submit a critical written reflection on their individual performance in the clinical skill as a means to further enhance their learning. The purpose of this assessment task is not focused on skill perfection alone, but also upon the student’s ability to develop capacity as an independent reflective practitioner; a key element of professional practice as set out in the NMBA competencies.

 

PART A: Clinical Skills Assessment: (NURBN3023)
Description:
Students will be allocated into groups of four (4) and will participate in a facilitator directed advanced care clinical scenario. Each group of students will be allocated four skills to complete within their group. Every student will individually perform one skill. The skills will be randomly allocated to individual group members as you enter the labs at the time of assessment. Throughout the simulation students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • Problem solve by displaying clinical reasoning skills
  • Apply an appropriate step-by-step approach in performing the allocated skill
  • Display therapeutic communication with the client
  • Provide appropriate clinical handover

In light of the random nature of allocating the skill, it is imperative that each student familiarizes themselves and practices all the four skills. Practice opportunities will be provided to students during laboratory time during the semester. Students will have the option of having themselves filmed during their performance of the clinical skill, which may assist students to reflect upon their individual performance. All four students will work as a team within their roles, caring for a patient in a clinical scenario. Two FedUni staff will be present to assess the four students during this process.
Group allocation will occur as a self-selection process in the first laboratory class.
The marking guides are available via Moodle Assessment Section for students to view and become familiar.
