Assignment Task

Overview

To assist you in gaining future employment and as a means of documenting ongoing professional growth post-graduation, all components of this task are required to be completed regardless of whether you are intending to apply for a graduate program or not. This task is to be completed with information gathered from, and relevant to, your own personal experience. The application requires students to prepare four (5) separate parts:

1. A job application cover letter,

2. Responses to selection criteria,

3. A curriculum vitae,

4. A compilation of evidence to support nursing competencies,

5. A recorded video response to two questions - one clinical, one professional

This assessment is designed to assess skills in meeting the requirements of Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) computer matching and for a formal graduate job application. Students are required to demonstrate their ability to apply the principles of ‘getting job-ready’ as taught in the course content for NURBN3032. In this task, students are required to use Registered Nurse Graduate Program (Position Identification number: 214973) position description provided to create an application in preparation for a graduate nurse program that can be used in response to real employment opportunities.

This task should be treated as a real job application. During the marking process lecturers will provide feedback on students’ ability to present themselves professionally in written documentation as well as in video performance. Students will be assessed on how well they can write a cover letter and a Curriculum vitae, as well as respond appropriately to key selection criteria, demonstrate nursing competency, and respond appropriately to previously unknown clinical and professional questions using a video format.

A: Graduate Job Application Written Components

The mock position description (PD) provided is modelled on a real one. It is what a real nursing PD will look like. For this task, students need to address the Key Selection Criteria from the position description (located on the last page). Students must provide the following in response to the job advertisement:

Step 1: Review and study the mock position description

It is important you understand the position description. Look for things such as:

  • What is the job title and purpose of the role
  • Examine the employee responsibilities and job requirements
  • Identify what are the skills, training and education that are required qualifications for the position

Step 2: Draft a cover letter

A Cover letter (no more than one page). This should include all required information such as the job name/application number, the reasons for applying for the job, and the appropriate form of address for the key contact person, and most suitable sign-off convention: ‘yours faithfully’ or ‘yours sincerely’.

Step 3: Draft a response to key selection criteria

A document that responds to four Key Selection Criteria (KSC) – 200 words each (+/- 10%) – NB: These are provided in the ‘application process’ section of the mock position description at the end of this document. Please be aware that responding to selection criteria requires concrete clinical examples from clinical placement or RUSON experiences as evidence that applicants can meet each stipulated criterion. The STAR technique is required to be used when responding to each criterion.

Step 4: Draft a Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A Curriculum Vitae (CV) (no more than 3 pages). This should use relevant headings in the following order:

  • Profile information
  • Education/qualifications (in reverse chronological order)
  • Practice History (this means placements completed) in reverse chronological order
  • Work history (in reverse chronological order)
  • Volunteer work (if applicable) Achievements (if applicable)
  • Relevant memberships/licences/checks
  • References (note we realise that different employers may require a different format, however for the purposes of this assessment students must follow the format outlined above).

Step 5: Compile relevant evidence to support your application

A compilation of “practice readiness” documentation (evidence to support your nursing competency): Provide evidence of any nursing-related short courses or training that you may have undertaken during your nursing studies or work in a health-related industry (i.e., BloodSafe certificate, Hand Hygiene certificate, First Aid certificate, etc). The documentation supplied should provide recent (within the previous two (2) years) evidence of achievement of relevant competencies at the level expected of a third-year student nurse and must include your name and the date of completion. You may provide a list of these, but copies of certificates/competency documentation are also required

B: Graduate Job Application: Video Response

The second component of this assessment task will require you to complete an online Moodle Video response (“Assessment Task 2: Video Responses”).

The portal will be open for 24 hours. Students can log into the portal at any time during that 24-hour period. Once commenced, students will have approximately 10 minutes to complete the video response.

The task will consist of two randomly generated questions (i.e., students will be presented with different questions to their colleagues). One question will pertain to a clinical scenario, the other to a professional issue.
