Assignment
While it is widely accepted that smoking impairs lung function, most of the evidence supporting the claim arises from studies of pulmonary function in adult, long-time smoker individuals. For this assignment, you have to conduct a small piece of research examining whether such deleterious effects of smoking can be detected in children who smoke as well. A widely used indicator of lung function is the forced expiratory volume (FEV), which measures how much air you can blow out of your lungs in a certain period – the higher, the better. Prolonged smoking is known to diminish FEV in adults, and those adults with diminished FEV also tend to have decreased pulmonary function as measured by other clinical variables. FEV measurements were made in 654 children in a pediatric clinic; moreover, the children were asked whether they were current smokers.
1.Provide appropriate summary figures and/or graphs to describe in non-technical language the composition of your sample.
2.Explore the available data and provide a comment on the observed relationships between the outcome of interest, FEV, and height, age, sex, and smoking status. Make use of graphs and summary figures as you feel appropriate. Ensure you provide a clear explanation and reflection on what the results you obtained show.
3.Assume the dataset contains a simple random sample from the under-20 population in the clinic’s town. In light of your answers to points 1-2, choose and fit a linear regression model,  linking FEV to one (or more) of the other variables. Describe the rationale behind the model,  check the assumptions, and interpret the parameter estimates with reference to the target population.
4.Consider the issue of study design and data collection. What if you had no information on the underlying sampling design? How would your interpretation of the findings in point 3 change, if at all?
5.Critically reflect on the significance of your findings and how they compare with what is reported in the literature. How might the results you have found be used to inform future research studies into the effect of smoking on lung function in children? Ensure you correctly  cite any studies you reference in the literature and assess the merit of your work against  the material you fin
