Gladys, aged 66 years, was placed into care when she was young. She is not totally sure why, but she believes it was because her mother wasn't married, because she remembers being referred to as a ‘bastard child’. Gladys spent her childhood and early teenage years in an Orphanage that had strict rules. She was expected to do chores from an early age, and was physical punished if the task was not done ‘well’ – but the staff all had different ideas about what ‘well’ meant, so Gladys never really knew if she was doing things right. She wasn’t allowed to interact with the local community. The only time she left the Orphanage was to attend church on Sundays, and even there, she and the Orphanage children were kept separate from the other parishioners. The Orphanage provided some basic schooling, but it was just a few hours a week. When Gladys was sixteen, she was sent to a foster home, and put into apprenticeship as a hairdresser. She wasn’t involved in the decision about the foster home nor the apprenticeship, and she was very stressed by the sudden changes. She developed anxiety and depression. She didn’t cope well in the foster home, and begged to go back to the Orphanage. The authorities told her that she couldn't go back, because she was now too old for it, so she was sent to a Home for Young Girls, but she continued with the apprenticeship. A couple of years later, she succeeded in getting a job in a hairdressing salon. This allowed her to leave the Girls Home and begin her independent life. Gladys found accommodation in a shared house, and tentatively began to explore the world independently. She maintained her worker role, and placed high expectations on herself in the workplace. However, she had difficulty developing relationships with others. She also continued to struggle with anxiety and depression, and attempted suicide on at least one occasion. Gladys had brief relationships with various partners, but it wasn’t until her early thirties that she met and married her husband, Carlos. They had two children, Rosita and Stuart. Carlos was very much the dominant partner in their relationship, and his expectations of Gladys were harsh and demanding, as well as being inconsistent. Gladys struggled with the relationship, especially after her children left home. In her late 50’s, Gladys developed early onset dementia. Eventually, she wasn’t able to manage the household or care for her family, which were her main roles. Instead, she needed others to care for her. When she reached this stage, Carlos became very abusive, so Rosita, Gladys’s daughter, organised for an Aged Care Assessment Team assessment. From this assessment, it was decided that Gladys should move into a residential aged care facility
