Assignment Task

Purposes

1) To understand and critically analyse what ‘person-centred care’ means in the context of nursing practice.

2) To complete a task using Generative AI with human evaluation of sources including their level of credibility, and application, ChatGPT 3.5, library data bases, journal articles, and professional guidelines. This requires critical engagement with AI generated content and evaluation of its output.

After reading these instructions, please use the NURS 1072 Assessment One Template provided to complete your written responses for Part A, no. 7 and Part B, questions 1-4.

Part A: What is person-centred care?

1. Read ‘The Person-Centred Nursing Framework’ (Book Chapter). This eReading can be located in Topic 3 or on the course site resources (eReadings) on the course site (McCormack & McCance, 2021). Make a note of the four domains in the framework and explore the Person-Centred Nursing Processes.

2. Log into ChatGPT 3.5 (If you have not already done so, create a free account with Open AI’s Chat GPT 3.5. ChatGPT 3.5 (openai.com). You may need to do this using an email address other than your UniSA-issued email address due to the email filtering system.)

3. Send a message (prompt) to Chat GPT to ask, “What is person-centred care?” (download, screenshot or copy the response given and file into a word document)

4. Set aside time to compare and contrast the Person-Centred Nursing Framework with the response by ChatGPT. Create a table with the response by ChatGPT in the left-hand column and in the adjacent column add notes about how these are described in the McCormack and McCance (2021) eReading ‘The Person-Centred Nursing Framework – highlight any similarities and differences. This will assist you when writing responses for Part A and Part B. Keep a separate copy of the table to add with your assessment submission as an appendix.

5. Undertake a library search using the UniSA library website using the same wording of the question- “What is person-centred care?”.

6. Choose TWO different source-types from the library search (for example, books, articles, conference proceedings, magazine articles and theses) for “what is person-centred care?”. (Hint: go to the right-hand side of your search to look at Resource-Type). Please add the reference name and details in the top column and add further brief notes to your table to further explore ‘'what is person-centred care” from each of the two sources.

7. Writing task: Compare and contrast each of the four (4) sources. Please use the NURS 1072 Assessment One Template provided to insert your responses.

The aim of this writing task is to compare and contrast the four (4) different sources - Chat GPT, Person-Centred Nursing Framework (Book Chapter) and two (2) other different source types. Ensure the sources you have picked are current (no more than 10 years old; you can add a filter for publication date in your search). List each reference type, title, date

Briefly summarise each source and how they contributed to increasing your understanding of person-centred care.

Provide a brief statement for each source on their credibility/trustworthiness, for example, low-quality source or high-quality source and why?

When using information from other sources to help you with your answers – please include in-text citations for each sentence from a source (e.g. integrating information from a source).

B: Person-centred care in nursing

For Part B go back to the eReading (McCormack & McCance, 2021) book chapter pages 15-19 and review the four domains of the Person-Centred Nursing Framework. Choose ONLY ONE of the five Person-Centred Nursing ‘Processes’ (e.g., providing holistic nursing care) to write about.

Your task is to now further explore ‘person-centred care’ using credible evidence to build your understanding of this topic from Part A. During the course so far, we have explored many resources such as professional guidelines, eReadings and you have learnt how to search a database on the library website. Therefore, all evidence is expected to be of a high quality.

Each section below is replicated on the NURS 1072 Assessment One Template where you will input your responses.

Use the academic learning guides to paraphrase e.g., how to write a paragraph and how to integrate referencing. (Hint: a paragraph should be a minimum of 3 sentences or less.) You will write this as if you would be explaining it, in an academic written format, to another first stage level student.

1. Introduction

Briefly describe which Person-Centred Nursing ‘Process’ you chose and why. This introductory paragraph does NOT need any references and should be written in the first person.

2. Person-Centred Nursing Process

Define the Care Process you chose from the Person-Centred Nursing Framework. Please provide in-text sources for your definition. Avoid using quotes and instead try to paraphrase and put into your own words.

3. Alignment with NMBA Professional nursing guidelines and Clinical Standards

a. Identify at least three (3) resources where your chosen Person-Centred Nursing Process can be located within the professional nursing guidelines (e.g., ICN code of ethics, NMBA code of conduct, RN standards for practice). Please be specific e.g., include the standard no. and page no.

b. Find and list the Clinical Standards that align with your chosen Care Process for example either the National Health and Safety Quality Standards or the Aged Care Quality Standards.

c. Reflect on the Person-Centred Nursing Framework - Person-Centred Nursing Process that you chose and explain how this process contributes to safety and quality in nursing care.

4. Application to practice

The expected outcome is the central construct of the Person-Centred Nursing Framework and focuses on what is expected from the delivery of effective person-centred nursing (McCormack & McCance, 2021). The key outcome identified from the delivery of person-centred nursing is simply “a good care experience” (p.19). On Figure 2.1 (p.16) this outcome has been placed in the centre.

Explain how you might consider implementing this as a future Registered Nurse, e.g. how you can demonstrate your chosen Person-Centred Nursing Process from the Person-Centred Nursing Framework, when communicating or interacting with a patient and/or their family. Give an example of how this will demonstrate effective person-centred nursing.

5. Summary for Parts A and B combined

Here you will sum up and tie together what you have presented in the body of your paper. Overall summary will cover the following points: a short paragraph for 5a), 5b) and 5c)

a. Provide a brief statement: what you learnt about using generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT 3.5) for assistance in writing an assignment, and other sources in relation to knowledge accuracy and/or being credible or useful sources of information? Describe any pitfalls. How might this guide your future writing?

b. Reflect on what you have discovered about person-centred care and the role of the professional nursing guidelines (for example, ICN code of ethics, NMBA code of conduct, RN standards for practice).

c. What aspects of providing person-centred care do you intend to put into practice when providing nursing care?
