Highlights
Course Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of person-centered and family-centered care in safe and effective care delivery
2. Discuss the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and symptomatology of the health breakdown of conditions being studied
3. Use clinical reasoning to identify nursing problems in the patient scenarios being studied and plan safe effective nursing care and patient education
4. Identify the attribute and skills required for culturally competent practice and apply to scenarios being studied
5. Identify the importance of effective inter-professional communication to safe practice and the prevention of medication error
6. Explain and apply legal and ethical concepts including beneficence, non-maleficence, negligence, open disclosure, and mandatory reporting
7. Utilize nursing research to support best practice nursing actions and critically appraise qualitative research and its application to empathetic patient care.
8. Demonstrate mastery of required medication and intravenous fluid calculations
Assessment 1 - Written Assignment – Care Plan Assessment Type Written Assignment Purpose This assignment is designed for students to consolidate their learning in the first three (3) tutorials; to demonstrate their clinical reasoning and application of the Clinical Reasoning Cycle to plan care for patients with alteration in fluid balance including identifying symptoms, risk factors and pathophysiological changes; setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely goals; and planning appropriate nursing actions with rationales based on scientific and best practice nursing literature. Description The Care Plan for this assignment is to be written on Care Plan Template provided in Blackboard > Course Materials and Assessment > Care Plan template for the assignment
1. Students are to select one of the following Nursing Problems for their Care Plan for the scenario patient (Mr Ron Fraser) from the first three tutorials in their tutorial workbook, either (NURS2101)
a. Altered fluid balance (hypovolaemia) from Scenario 2B, or
b. Altered fluid balance (hypervolaemia) from Scenario 3A.
2. Utilising clinical reasoning skills and knowledge students should identify and list the cluster of abnormalities (cues) from the scenario that relate to the identified priority patient problem, and compare these to recognised normal values.
3. From the Mr Ron Fraser scenarios identify the risk factors and prior occurrences that may have contributed to the identified problem and support this with reference to literature
4. Discuss the pathophysiology (altered physiological functioning) that is occurring in the chosen scenario and link this to the symptoms (cues) presented. Support this discussion with reference to literature
5. The priority Nursing Problem should be expressed as an actual Nursing Diagnosis with related to and evidenced by statements (suggested length 50 words)
6. Set a related SMART goal with outcome criteria that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely.
7. Identify four priority Nursing Actions with some detail to achieve the stated goal/s
8. Provide a rationale for each action with reference to scientific or best practice literature.
9. Provide an APA reference list of all source material used. (Reference List not included in the word count) Weighting 25% Compulsory Requirements
The assignment should be written on the Template provided on Blackboard and be submitted to Turnitin through the relevant portal in Blackboard > Assessment Assessment Criteria See marking rubric in Appendix 1 Return Method Online Feedback Provided Online Opportunity to Reattempt Students will NOT be given the opportunity to reattempt this assessment.
Assessment 2 - Written Assignment 2 – Qualitative Research Report Assessment Type Written Assignment Purpose An Empathetic understanding of the lived experience of patients and family is crucial to the delivery of person and family-centered care. By undertaking this assignment students will further develop their ability to critically read, reflect on and apply qualitative nursing research findings to patient care. An online library module is provided within the Blackboard course to support students in identifying and critiquing qualitative research. Description
1. Students should access the papers listed below and available in Blackboard> Course Readings, and select one of the qualitative research papers for their assignment
2. Write a report on the research paper that covers the following areas. Note that in writing this report the student must use their own words and not “cut and paste” from the chosen paper. The assignment requires that you describe the research that was undertaken, but also apply a beginning level of critical analysis. The questions for this assignment have been based on the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) and modified for undergraduate students. Students should use material such as the CASP tool provided in Blackboard Course Materials and also Assessments, and material on research methodology to support the critical appraisal of the chosen paper.
a) Introduction: Clearly identify the research paper you have chosen, briefly state why this topic is important to nurses, and outline what your report will cover.
b) Background: Outline the topic area that was being addressed in the paper, and findings from previous literature. Did the authors clearly identify the problem, what previous research had been done in this area, and what they perceived as the gap in current knowledge of this area?
c) Aim: What was the aim of the research undertaken? Was this clearly stated?
d) Study design (Methodology): What research methodology was used? Briefly explain the philosophical underpinnings of this method. Is the chosen method appropriate for the aims of the study?
e) Methods: Describe how the study was conducted, including a description of participants, recruitment, data collection, and data analysis. Were these methods suitable to achieve the study aims?
f) Ethics: Were ethical considerations addressed by the authors? Did you feel that the study maintained participant privacy, autonomy, and safety?
g) Results: What were the main findings of the study? Were they clearly explained and supported directly from the data?
h) Discussion: Were the study results discussed in relation to credibility, significance, and compared to results from other research studies? Did the discussion help you to understand the value of the research findings?
i) Conclusion: What conclusion did the authors draw as a result of the study? Did the conclusion answer the aim/research question? Based on the study did they identify recommendations for practice or further research?
j) Limitations: Did the authors identify any limitations in the study? Did you feel that there were other limiting factors?
k) Reflect on what you have learned about the experience of the patient and/or family and discuss how you will apply this in your future nursing practice (suggested length 250 words)
l) Provided an APA reference list including the research paper chosen and any other resources used. Ensure that all source material is acknowledged in text. (Reference list is not included in the word count) Weighting 25% Compulsory Requirements
