Highlights
Reflective Journaling
A weekly reflective journal will address standards of practice (see evaluation form), exploring events or issues in the clinical setting. Your clinical facilitator may adjust this assignment schedule based on the needs and clinical workload of the group; Often the term “evidence-based” is used in relation to practice. This means that nursing practice is based on research and documented literature. For this reason, learners are required to include documented literature in their reflective writing. Refer to an example of a Reflective Writing Journal in the “Forms” section of this syllabus.
Reflective journals need to be at least one page in length and address a different standard of practice each week.
One of the reflective journals must be focused on reflective writing for clinical. For each clinical, you will be asked to respond to a series of focused questions through a reflective journal designed to highlight certain aspects of the clinical experience.
In Clinical 2 (NURS2402) please respond to the following questions in a Reflective Journal. At times disciplines tend to become myopic in their perceptions of the scope of health care provision. There are other disciplines have in providing care. Pick a discipline that you have come in contact with within this clinical rotation (social workers, unit clerks,
physicians, respiratory technologists are just some examples)
1.What is your understanding of the role of the discipline in health care?
2.How does the nursing staff interact with this discipline?
3Next, interview a member of your chosen discipline; Ask them about their role in health care and their communication with nursing. Also, ask them what they would like to communicate to nurses regarding the impact nurses have on their activities. Reflect on this interview re what you learned from speaking to this discipline. Please hand this journal to your clinical facilitator. The clinical practicum is a period of personal and professional growth. It is important that the learner reflects on what happens in the clinical setting. Some people are more adept at reflective writing than others. In order to help organize thoughts, as well as encourage critical thinking (this means analytical!) process, use the format below.
Four Essential Elements of Reflective Writing
Event or Situations
This is an overview of subjective and/or objective experiences about what happened and how you felt. (Something that made you pause or challenged the way you think.) You might reflect on some of the following for examples:
•what did you see, hear, touch or smell?
•what is the patient/staff member telling you?
•what is or is not making sense to you?
•what is happening?
•what did you do?
•how did you feel about the situation? frustrated? sad? happy? discouraged?
•was there an issue of significance?
Research; What resources did you use to gain further insight?
Please use at least one of the following and give credit to the source with an APA format citation:
•nursing/medical journals
• textbooks
A personal conversation with a health care professional (other than your primary nurse such as a physiotherapist, physician, pharmacist) that is of substantial value could also be cited here. However, remember to give credit to the source ( personal communication). If you use a personal conversation, a written resource must be used as well.20
•often the term “evidence-based” is used in relation to practice.
This means that nursing practice is based on research and documented literature. For this reason, learners are required to include documented
literature in their reflective writing.
Plan; You now have information that you researched and from your observations and other resources, you need to formulate just how this all relates to your nursing practice and what your future actions or interventions will be. This works to develop critical thinking and evaluation and is very important in your practice.
• to identify what your own actions will be in the future
•identify some real concrete plans of what you would do now
•identify some plan of how you could handle a similar situation in the future standard of Practice;
LIST which one(s) apply to your journal situation/issue:
•Professional accountability and responsibility
• Service to the public and self-regulation
•Ethical practice
