Highlights
For this assessment task, students will choose a research topic and plan a qualitative study to address the topic chosen.
The research plan must include the following components:
1. Background: Discuss the background for this qualitative study and provide a justification for why the research is needed (supported by high quality contemporary literature)
2. Research Question: State a qualitative research question on the selected topic that clearly identifies the study population and phenomenon of interest.
3. Study Design
A. Describe an appropriate methodology to address the research question for this qualitative study.
B. Describe the study population, eligibility criteria, study sample, sampling method and recruitment methods for this qualitative study.
C. Describe what methods you will use to collect and analyse the data for this qualitative study
4. Study limitations and rigour: Discuss the rigour/trustworthiness and limitations for this qualitative study (supported by high quality contemporary literature).
5. Ethical Considerations: Discuss the ethical implications for this qualitative study including vulnerable populations (such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples) where applicable.
This is to be supported by high quality contemporary literature and relevant state or national research polices.
Background
Suicide is a global public health problem and is the 10th leading cause of death worldwide. In 2019, the World Health Organization reported that approximately 800,000 people die by suicide every year, with one suicide death occurring every 40 seconds. This alarming statistic highlights the need for effective strategies in preventing suicide. A particularly vulnerable population at risk for suicide are individuals recently discharged from inpatient psychiatric settings and currently managed in the community. This transition period can be a critical time for these individuals as they may experience challenges such as inadequate follow-up care, lack of social support, and difficulty adjusting to their new environment. These factors can increase their risk of suicide.
Research has shown that case management can be an effective strategy in reducing suicide rates among this population. Case management involves a collaborative approach in which a case manager works with an individual to identify their needs and connects them to appropriate resources and services. However, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of suicide prevention strategies specifically focused on consumers recently discharged from inpatient settings and currently managed in the community.
Study Design
A qualitative research study using an interpretive phenomenological approach would be appropriate to address the research question. This methodology aims to understand the meanings and experiences of individuals within a specific context. This approach is well-suited for exploring the experiences and perceptions of case managers who work closely with individuals at risk for suicide.
The study population would include case managers who have experience working with individuals recently discharged from inpatient settings and currently managed in the community. Eligibility criteria would include being a registered mental health professional with at least two
Years of experience in case management. Purposive sampling would be used to select participants who have a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds. Recruitment methods would include reaching out to mental health agencies and professional networks to identify potential Participants.
Data Collection and Analysis
Data would be collected through semi-structured interviews with the selected case managers. The interviews would be audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim for analysis. Thematic analysis, which involves identifying patterns and themes in the data, would be used to analyze the data. This method allows for a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the experiences and perceptions of the case managers. Study Limitations and Rigour
One limitation of this study could be the potential biases of the participants as they may have a vested interest in promoting the effectiveness of their work. To address this, reflexivity would be incorporated into the study, where the researcher reflects on their own experiences and biases throughout the research process. The small sample size may also limit the generalizability of the findings. However, the use of purposive sampling and a diverse range of participants can mitigate this limitation. Additionally, member checking, where participants are provided with the opportunity to review and provide feedback on the findings, can enhance the rigour of the study.
Ethical Considerations
There are ethical implications in conducting research with individuals at risk for suicide, as they may be in a vulnerable state. Informed consent would be obtained from all participants and ethical principles such as respect, confidentiality, and beneficence would be adhered to. For vulnerable populations such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, additional ethical considerations would include ensuring cultural sensitivity and involving community members in the research process. This study would also follow all state and national research policies regarding mental health research.
In conclusion, this qualitative study is necessary to better understand the experiences and perceptions of case managers in implementing suicide prevention strategies for individuals recently discharged from inpatient settings and currently managed in the community. The findings of this study can inform the development and improvement of suicide prevention programs for this vulnerable population.
Research Question
What are the experiences and perceptions of case managers in implementing suicide prevention strategies for consumers recently discharged from inpatient settings and currently managed in the community? What are the successful interventions and their impact on the safety and well-being of mental health patients in the community?
Methodology
The appropriate methodology for this qualitative study will be phenomenological research methodology. Phenomenology research is qualitative research. (Neubauer et al., 2019) The focus of this research is to explore consumers with lived experiences (personal experience of mental illness) to gain insight into their perspectives about challenges and effectiveness of suicide prevention strategies in acute outpatient psychiatric settings. Phenomenology method is specially designed to educate health professionals about first hand experiences. (Rietmeijer & Veen, 2021)- Explain why you have chosen this methodology.
