It will focus on policies and practices that promote respectful and collaborative woman centred care and the value of continuity of midwifery care to achieving these goals. Students will be required to reflect on beliefs around childbirth including their own personal beliefs.

Subject Learning Outcomes

Professional Foundations of Midwifery is part of the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery. Aim

The aim of this assessment is to gain a deeper understanding of women’s experiences of childbirth. You will reflect on what is important to childbearing women, the impact of birth on a woman, and what you can learn from their experiences about providing optimal midwifery care.

Reflection

1. For this reflection, you need to listen to one of the following podcasts of a woman’s story about her pregnancy, labour and birth. Reflect on what was important to the woman during her childbearing experience. Reflect on what this teaches you about caring for a childbearing woman and how this relates to the philosophy of midwifery.

2. Reflective observation: What was important to the woman and why do you think it was important to her? What was she thinking, feeling, needing? What worked well and/or what did not work well for the woman and why do you think this was the case?
