Learning outcomes
Mental health nurses need to identify and describe psychiatric signs and symptoms experienced by consumers and plan nursing care to provide positive mental health recovery-oriented outcomes for the consumer and family.
This assessment task relates to intended learning outcomes:
Subject ILO 1 - Explain the role of social, psychological and biological factors relevant to mental health and recovery.
Subject ILO 2 – Have a critical understanding of the diagnostic structures and systems used in mental health.
Course ILO 1 – Critically evaluate models of care relevant to the continuum, to inform co-constructed personalized care strategies that meet the consumer’s life needs as well as health needs.
Course ILO 6 – Exercise enhanced clinical judgment and decision making and insight into specialist mental health nursing in pursuit of optimal outcomes for the person and family.
Assessment description
This assessment task requires you to find and critique a care or treatment plan provided for a consumer experiencing anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder. You are to submit your work as a mini-pechakucha oral presentation.
A mini-pechakucha is a presentation style in which 10 presentation slides are shown for 20 seconds each (3.5 minutes).
Assessment task – Critical thinking in mental health nursing
Find a published case study in which an individual was treated or received care for anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder. The case can be current or date back through the history of psychiatry and madness covered in week 1. Carefully and critically read the case study and address one (1) of the following:
Briefly discuss if the mental health diagnosis given in the case is consistent with the current DSM-5 criteria. The discussion is to include each of the following:
a) An overview of the case
b) The signs/symptoms described in the case
c) The diagnosis is given in the case
d) A critique of the diagnosis against current DSM-5 criteria
e) A conclusion regarding the validity of the diagnosis provided in the case study.
OR
Critique the treatment or care provided or planned based on the most recent scientific literature (provide evidence for your answer). The critique is to include each of the following:
a) An overview of the case
b) The signs/symptoms described in the case
c) The treatment or care, provided or planned, in the case
d) A critique of the treatment or care planned or provided in the case based on the current literature current literature
e) A conclusion regarding the validity of the treatment or care provided or planned in the case study.
You are to present your work as an oral mini-pechakucha; a three-and-a-half-minute recorded PowerPoint presentation uploaded to the LMS. The mini-pechakucha consists of only 10 slides spoken to for only 20 seconds each.
How to record your presentation
Step 1: Create your slideshow
Create your slideshow in MS PowerPoint or your preferred presentation tool. If you wish to include a recording of yourself with a webcam, remember to leave a blank space placeholder on your slides.
Step 2: Prepare your script for recording
Prepare your script for your recording. Practice reading your script with the slideshow and make any adjustments
Step 3:Record your slideshow
Record your slideshow and audio script using your preferred screencast software, save in MP4 file format and upload your file to the Wistia platform.
