Case Study Assessment Answer

Assignment Task: Case Study 1 Joe is an 85-year old relatively fit gentleman with no major history of illness. Three days ago, he developed a low-grade fever. He also complained to his wife, Janet, of feeling like he has ‘razor-blades’ in his throat. When Janet looked inside Paul’s mouth, she saw white spots on his tonsils. She then insisted on taking Paul to see their GP, Sara. Later that afternoon, on examination in the GPs office, Paul had a fever of 39.8C. When Sara examined Paul’s throat she saw that Paul’s tonsils were now covered in white biofilm. The GP listened to Paul’s chest sounds but did not find anything abnormal. She also palpated his neck and found that in addition to swollen tonsils, Paul also had swollen neck lymph nodes. No other anomalies were identified when the GP assessed Paul’s lungs, but the GP informed Paul that he has bacterial tonsillitis. a) Discuss the events of an acute inflammatory response you would expect to see in Paul’s case. b) Discuss the role of the lymphatic system and adaptive immune response in responding and resolving the bacterial infection in Paul’s case Case Study 2 Georgia is a healthy, 32-year old woman, participating in a 10km running race. As she starts to run, she notices significant changes in her heart rate and her breathing. a) Discuss the physiological changes to the cardiovascular system (from being stationary to running the race) during the race considering the following factors in your answer: heart rate, peripheral resistance, skin blood flow, cardiac output and blood flow distribution. (300 words - 5 marks) b) As Georgia runs, her breathing rate and blood flow will adjust to running. What physiological mechanisms are in place to ensure that there is not a rise in arterial PCO2 during the race, and how do they work? (100 words – 4 marks) c) Identify the mechanisms that control peripheral resistance. Explain how they either increase or decrease peripheral resistance. (300 words - 5 marks) Case Study 3 Mike has been experiencing issues with his long-distance vision, with objects starting to appear blurrier. Discuss the processes involved in focussing a visual image on the retina and how this may be affected in Mike’s case. (Max 400 words, 8 marks) Case Study 4 Jorge’s exams are just around the corner and he is starting to experience increasing levels of anxiety. During the exam time, as the examiners distribute the exam, Jorge experiences a classic “fight or flight” reaction. Discuss the division of the nervous system that is responsible for this phenomenon. Which body systems are affected and how do they respond?
