Management - Literature Research Assessment Answer

Assignment Task: OBAR100 OBAR100 is the first of three research units in your major. You have already conducted secondary research for your essay. This involved finding out what others have found so you can take that into account in formulating your ideas and presenting your own considered argument. Using and rethinking existing knowledge is secondary research. OBAR100 For this assignment, we want to introduce you to primary research, which adds to existing knowledge. The difference is that with primary research you need to be able to show others exactly what you did to achieve your results by using a report format. Developing your ability to understand, analyse and create reports are all important skills for success at university and your career. However, it would be unreasonable to ask you to design an entire primary research project in your first semester/study period ?, so we have completed some of the work for you ?. We have provided the research question: OBAR100 What are students’ expectations of university learning? Now you need to develop a hypothesis. The hypothesis is based on literature search only. Getting the hypothesis right is as difficult and important as getting your thesis right in an essay. This report is different from doing primary research yourself because you will have the results given to you before developing your hypothesis so it is important that the hypothesis is based on the literature, not the data. DEVELOPING A HYPOTHESIS A hypothesis is something you can test. Every day we observe and make predictions. I might think that if I do this, it will have that effect; for example, if I have second helpings every day I will put on weight. I test this and find that this hypothesis is either supported or refuted. Either way, I learn something about the effect of eating second helpings. OBAR100 Now, think about your expectations of university learning. From your observations, would you predict that your expectations of university would differ from other students on the basis of gender, age, mode of study (internal or external), or entrance pathway (i.e. school, mature age)? Let’s take the example of entrance pathway and make a prediction (note that this variable is NOT what will be used for your report). OBAR100 Students who enter university straight from school will have different expectations about the importance of participation for their learning than students who enter university later. This prediction indicates that the entrance pathway will affect student expectations about the importance of participation for their learning. OBAR100 In this case, the entrance pathway is referred to as the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE because it can affect student expectations about the importance of participation for their learning, which is therefore referred to as the DEPENDENT VARIABLE. Having made a prediction based on observation, the next step is do a literature review to investigate what other researchers have found about student expectations of university learning. There are some possible sources on the following page. OBAR100 The next step is to review the literature on previous research on this question (see the following page for suggested sources). Now, based on our observation, our prediction and the literature, let’s predict a direction (adding the modifier “more” to one of the variables) so that it can be tested: Mature age university students expect that their participation will be more important for their learning than students entering university straight from school. This is a good hypothesis because of it: OBAR100
  1. is testable
  2. is a statement
  3. identifies the participants – university students
  4. identifies the independent variable – entrance pathway
  5. identifies the dependent variable – student expectations about the importance of participation for their learning
  6. focuses on ONE experiment
  7. predicts effect.
