The “Project Progress and Plan”

The “Project Progress and Plan” is the first assessment task of the OENG1145 Master’s Research Project II course.  Each student should prepare a document of maximum 2 pages (not including cover page, references or appendices)  to be formally submitted on Canvas. Drafting a research plan and a project progress report is about utilising your  knowledge based on literature review to identify the research questions to fill those research gaps, and summarising  your work activities so far in a scientific manner.

You have prepared a research plan in your OENG1144 Master’s Research Project I at the beginning of the project; at  this time, you will need to revise the plan based on the first semester work. In terms of progress report, it is required  that you summarise the work you have already completed in the first semester, and outline in detail the work you will  carry out during the second semester, in order to realise the objectives of the project.

Learning Outcomes

Plan and effectively manage an independent research project at an advanced professional engineering level (LO 1)  After completion of this assessment you should be able to:

  • outline in detail the work you will carry out during this course in order to realise the objectives ofthe  project;
  •  report research progress that has been developed in the past weeks.

Assessment details

The assessment should consist of a report including the following parts:

  • The format of the Progress Report is formal report format. Typical sections in a progress report and their contents are outlined below.
  • Title and Summary/Abstract - provides a brief title and an overview of the report, summarising the topic of your  project, the work already completed, and the work planned for the second semester.
  • Introduction - is similar to the introduction of the Research Proposal. It provides the background to the investigation,  defines the topic or the research problem and clearly states the aims of the research.
  • Project Work completed to date - presents a report of your progress so far. You need to describe the work that you  have done (for example, the first stages of a design; a preliminary literature review; some experimental work). You  then need to discuss the outcomes of your investigation so far. This section may include headings such as literature  review, preliminary experimental work, design calculations, data analysis, case studies, and findings to date.
