Assignment Task : Online Comment Piece and In-Class Presentation

Purpose and Overview of Assessment Task: The purpose of this assignment is to assist you to develop your legal and ethical literacy in media, recognising legal and ethical issues for the media and developing skills as a media practitioner in dealing effectively with these issues. This assignment is designed to stimulate discussion and debate within the class and reflection by the whole class on a broad range of topics and issues that we would not otherwise be able to cover. It also enables you to consider in more depth the legal and/or ethical issues arising in a particular area of media or from a particular story of interest to you. And it enables you to develop skills in critical analysis, research and oral/written presentation. You should briefly consult with your lecturer about your choice of story prior to commencing this task.

This task has 2 parts –

1. A comment piece on a current media story (like an opinion piece / mini essay with references) posted online (in the Class Discussion Thread for your class and through Turn It In) – on the Sunday night before the Thursday in-class presentation. 2. In-class presentation - focusing in greater depth on some aspect of the comment piece (it should not simply be the comment piece cut and pasted onto PowerPoint slides or read out in class) and should be seen as a chance to further debate or expand on the legal and ethical aspects of your case study or topic with the class. 10-12 minutes max.
