This assignment aims at providing students with opportunities to apply Ontario Building Code requirements on a large/ complex building. Expectations: You are expected to assess assigned code requirements of one basement, first storey, second storey and one typical upper storey of the current occupancy type, and then compare those requirements with the new user to see what changes are required. You are also expected to inform the client of the feasibility of this 'change of use' in the Conclusion. Correct references, relevant calculations and sketches are required. Complete the following sections (please use a new page to start each section, and provide a Table of Contents with page numbers:
1. Introduction: Classify the given building; Building area, Building height, occupancy type, construction type, and General requirements of the selected storeys; Occupant loads, interior finishes, flame-spread ratings, smoke development classification (existing use & proposed use):
2. Fire safety of the selected storeys: Code Objectives, Occupancy types, Fire resistance ratings of floors and their supporting structures, ceilings and fire separations between compartments (existing use and proposed use):
3. High building requirements: is this a high building? Fire-safety and fire-fighting; accessibility, sprinkler systems, fire alarm requirements, fire-fighter elevator and their fire separation, standpipe systems, lighting and emergency power (existing use and proposed use):
4. Safety within floors, Exit requirements of the building, Service facilities of the selected storeys: travel distance, doors, corridors, stairs, dead-end corridors (if any), elevators (existing use and proposed use):
5. Health requirements of the selected storeys:: room sizes, windows, plumbing (existing use and proposed use):
6. Barrier-free requirements of the selected storeys (existing use and proposed use):
7. OBC Data Matrix for Part 11 (entire building):
8. Conclusion: inform the client what changes are required if this building were to be converted into a Long-Term Care facility- calculate the change of occupant load of those four storeys. 9. Reflection: indicate your learning through the application of knowledge and challenges (not personal challenges).
