Course project is an individual effort and includes design and implementation of a program (a simulated OS) for general process management. You will deliver your
project in the following two parts.
Part 1: (Due June 21) Implementing data structures and utilities for
Process Control Block (PCB) Queue manipulation:
• Each process will be represented by its PCB and each process will be given a priority.
• Each process info can be entered manually by user input or loaded from text file. Proper Error Handling is expected.
• Each PCB should have a uniform format.
• The collections of PCBs form process queues and are constructed as Linked Lists (single or doubly linked lists). As an example, you need to implement a ready queue and waiting queues by using these linked lists of PCBs.
• The operations on a queue include:
o adding a PCB to a given position in the queue, the default position is the end (tail) of the queue.
o deleting a PCB with a given PID, the default is the beginning (head) of the queue.
• The main program will use these add and delete functions to manipulate different queues of PCBs.
• You also need some utility functions/methods to show the contents of different queues.
• Part 1 submission should include:
• Explanation of the data structures used for Part1.
• Algorithms used for adding, deleting, and other utilities implemented for
Part 1. Include the explanation of the algorithms.
• Execution trace showing different PCBs being added/deleted with screen shots, and the contents of the queues for Part 1.
• The program code (written in your favorite language).
• Explanation of your programing environment (software, hardware, OS, etc. used).
You may use existing library to represent the data structure needed for this Assignments. You may also use third party API to handle some of the tasks including: file processing, process management, etc. But, you need to understand how that works and make references to these tools and libraries in your document, if used.
