Assignment Task -
Introduction to the area of research & context (organization lens or society lens)
- First, determine if your dissertation focuses on an actual problem, an issue, or challenge. A problem is where a solution might need to be clearly explained (explanatory), an issue might be something that is apparent but is not quite a problem needing a clear solution yet (exploratory), whereas a challenge might be looking at the feasibility of a proposed business decision i.e. entering a new market or development of a new product (descriptive or evaluative). However, it is not always as black and white as this, as you will see below!
- Here you need to discuss the area of research you are proposing to research and start by briefly explaining that area ‘specifically’ – what is needed here is detail on the current position of what is going on/being said now in your research area now – the example I gave you in seminar task 1 on fast fashion is a good example of ‘what’s being said now’. You can be more general about the topic area in the dissertation, where you have more space.
Here is an example of a research area to demonstrate the context, which could be a problem or an issue. There is a real issue with sustainable consumerism, or lack of, in terms of the impact on the planet of over-consumption generally, which makes it a real problem – as we know this through science sustainability agenda. However, while a real solution is still currently being worked through, it’s safe to say, anecdotally, that fast fashion companies must be more ethically and socially responsible in regard to their impact on the planet.
Argument underpinning your research area
- Here you will discuss the issue/problem/challenge that you are proposing to research but in the context of it being a problem i.e. should Boohoo and PLT be communicating messages via social media that develop and raise a responsible and sustainable awareness of their products on their followers/customers regarding responsible and sustainable consumerism? The argument – Yes - given the sustainability agenda, the negative press they have received on this issue and the science behind the impact of the fast fashion industry on the planet and people (society). Literature sources should be obtained that discuss these three issues but that reflects the current position – as described above – what is being said about this now – in 2020 (2019, 2018, 2017). These three issues are concepts that form the themes that underpin dissertation 1. Sustainability agenda, 2. Fast fashion and 3. Sustainable consumerism.
- The chosen industry also needs to be discussed, specifically and the area where you believe fast fashion sits in relation to the sustainability agenda and this needing to be more prevalent.
- Organization Lens - Discuss Boohoo and PLT as the organization case studies – if you are accessing these organizations to obtain primary data (or secondary dissertation) – i.e. your research is focused on the organization angle.
- Societal Lens - Alternatively, you might have an organization as a case study but are not seeking to get access or present the research from the organization angle, rather you may be researching the area from the perspective of a product or service in relation to consumers or customers – societal angle. Focusing on an issue in this way relates to research in society i.e. social phenomenon and how it is perceived by members of society more generally i.e. importance, impact, attitudes, and behaviors. This is ok, but the research needs placing in the context of particular societal groupings i.e. demographics, rather than in the context of the organization lens. So, for fast fashion, that would be a specific demographic, such as their predominant target market or another demographic, the sustainable/ethical consumer.
