Introduction

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to utilize and apply system safety analytical techniques to an everyday consumer product: Residential Electric or Gas Stoves (ranges).

Before performing a system safety analysis, you will need to perform a literature review to have an understanding of the injuries associated with the use of these products, safety standards pertaining to the installation/use of these products, and safety features developed by manufacturers to reduce the risk of consumer injuries when using these products.
 

Deliverable: The deliverable for this project is a report that is completed individually.
 

Formatting Guidelines: Submitted reports not following the formatting guidelines below will receive a grade of a zero (0). The submitted report must be in a pdf format, the report must be typed in single space with 12pt Times New Roman font.

Cover page: The cover page should include the title of your report, your full name, and class name. Your title should clearly indicate whether your report is on gas or electric stoves.

Section 1 – Introduction (2-page minimum, not including images/tables)

1.1 History of Residential Stoves: What were the first residential stoves? What has changed from the earliest most primitive residential stove to stoves currently being used in residences. Provide a background on their design and how these appliances work.

1.2 Hazards Associated with the use of Residential Stoves: What are the hazards associated with the use of these appliances? What are the most commonly reported injuries associated with these appliances? Report statistics that are relevant to injuries (number of injuries, types of injuries, etc.)

1.3 Residential Stove Safety Measures: What standards are there to reduce the risk of injury due to these appliances. What types of safety designs/devices/countermeasures used to reduce the likelihood and severity of injury from these appliances?
 

Section 2 – Fault Tree Analysis

2.1 Fault Tree: Construct a Fault Tree with a minimum of 15 basic events where the top event is the
“Injury/Harm to Individual”. The logic of your fault tree must be accurate. You may construct your fault
tree in Microsoft PowerPoint/Excel/OneNote or any other software you are comfortable, but a clear and
legible printout must be included in this section of the report.
 

2.2 Cut-sets and Minimum Cut-sets: Perform a matrix analysis to solve for the cut-sets and minimum
cut-sets of your fault tree. All work must be shown (printed). Explain what the cut-sets and minimum
cut-sets mean.

2.3 Path-Sets: Perform a matrix analysis to solve for the path-sets of your fault tree. All work must be shown (printed). Explain what the path-sets mean.
 

2.4 Probabilities of Occurrence of Basic Events: Use the following format to report the probability of occurrence of each basic event in your fault tree. You may estimate these probabilities (educated guess). You do not have to identify how you came up with these probabilities (your probabilities should be between 0-15%).

 

2.5 Probability of Injury/Harm to the User: Calculate the probability of the top event in your fault
tree. You may calculate this either by using the minimum cut-sets or by the branch method. All work
must be shown (printed).

2.6 Summary of Fault Tree Analysis: Summarize your findings from the fault tree analysis in a single
paragraph. Some questions you should answer: What can recommendations can be made to reduce the
likelihood/severity of injury (based on your analysis)? Are there any single point failures? What are
some design deficiencies of the system that were identified in your analysis?

Section 3 – Energy Trace and Barrier Analysis
 

3.1 Energy Trace and Barrier Analysis: Perform a thorough ETBA on the stove. Your analysis must include all the energy sources associated with the syste (electricity, heat, thermal, chemical, kinetic)

3.2 Summary of Energy Trace and Barrier Analysis: Summarize your findings from your ETBA in a single paragraph. What valuable information was provided by this analysis that the fault tree analysis did not provide?
 

Section 4 - References
