Assignment Description
When working in paediatrics, OTAs often address self-care skills. This assignment requires the students to write a report on enabling the self-care skill of dressing in children.
The objective of this project is for students to understand the process of grading and adapting dressing to meet a child’s specific needs. The students will select 2 different scenarios, each related to a child with specific diagnoses. For each scenario selected, the students will grade and adapt putting on a jacket, with fasteners, for that child at two different ages, i.e. 3 years, 12years.
For this assignment, imagine that you are an OTA working for a children’s treatment centre, and the treatment sessions occur at the centre and/or the child’s home. Part of your role is to help educate clients with disabilities in self-care tasks. Choose 2 scenarios from below that you would like to address. Keep in mind that for each scenario you select, you are assuming you are working with the same child across the 9 years.
A. Cerebral palsy and high muscle tone
B. Low muscle tone and mild intellectual disability
C. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and sensory defensiveness
Refer to Chapters 10 and 12 in your textbook, as well as the specific chapters related to the diagnoses you select. Additional research is recommended. The assignment steps are listed below.
This paper should be no more than 5 pages, using 12 point font. Include a reference list (additional page). You are required to lay this assignment out in a chart (e.g., age across the top, diagnoses down the side) and use point form. This assignment is to be completed in groups of 2-3 and is worth 20% of your final mark.
Assignment steps

b) Child with low muscle tone and mild intellectual disability
c) Child with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and sensory defensiveness
Note: You will be providing treatment, regarding putting on a jacket, for each client selected at the age of 3 and 12 years.
2. For each client selected (from above), follow steps 2 to 7, outlined below.
Each step below must be addressedfor both ages in each scenario (3 years, 12 years).
Although each child will have challenges regarding developmental milestones, be sure to consider age appropriate suggestions related to dressing.

a) Physical environment (e.g., equipment, lighting, noise level)
b) Social environment (e.g., who is present)
4. List adaptations to clothing.

b) Your position in relation to the child
c) Any handling, positioning techniques used and/or sensory integration techniques applied
