Assignment Description
This assignment requires you to write a report on the completion of an activity analysis. An activity analysis explores all the possibilities and potentials of an activity. While OTs are responsible for performing thorough activity analysis in meeting clients’ needs, OTAs must apply the basics of activity analysis when delivering treatment. This application allows the OTA to adapt and grade activities for clients to help reach identified treatment goals. The objective of this project is for the student to understand the process of selecting and analyzing anactivity for intervention, to include consideration of adapting and/or grading it based on client needs.
For this assignment, you will work in groups of 2-3. As a group, you will select one of the diagnoses from assignment 2 (DSM) that was addressed by you or the colleagues in your group, and consider the occupational performance challenges for that client. Select an ADL, IADL or leisure activity that you would like to address with that particular client in enabling engagement in occupation. Determine how much of that occupation can be addressed in a 60-75 minute treatment session. Depending on your client’s functional status and the demands of the activity, you may choose to teach part of the occupation in the single treatment session. For example, as part of grocery shopping you may enable your client to create a shopping list in this session, and perform the tasks of selecting and purchasing the groceries in a future session.
This assignment requires that you define the objective of your treatment session, select an appropriate activity to support that objective, and provide an analysis of your selected activity. You will also include homework for your client related to that activity. Keep in mind your client’s diagnosis and related symptoms, to include side effects of medication, and how that impacts participation in daily tasks. You can make some assumptions about your client (e.g., age, gender, culture, values, goals, functional level) in considering that ‘just right challenge’pertaining to your ADL/IADL or leisure activity selection and related treatment session.
The activity analysis should include the following:
Name of activity
Environment activity will occur
Materials required for the activity
Fit of activity to client and goals
Steps and time factors of activity
Physical demands of activity
Sensory demands of activity
Perceptual demands of activity
Cognitive demands of activity
Social demands of activity
Once you have outlined your activity analysis, briefly describe ways in which you can adapt/grade the activity to further meet your client’s needs.
Refer to Chapter 15 in your textbook for considerations for your paper. Chapters 19 and 20 may also provide valuable information. The assignment steps are listed below.
This paper should be no more than 5 pages, double spaced, using 12 point font. Include a reference list. This assignment is to be completed in small groups and is worth 25% of your final mark.
Assignment steps
1. Select one of the diagnoses from Assignment 2 (DSM) that was addressed by you or the colleague(s) in your group, and consider the occupational performance challenges for that client.
2. Select an ADL, IADL or leisure activity that presents a challenge for your client and briefly describe the related challenge
3. Define the objective of the treatment session using a SMART goal
4. Conduct and outline an activity analysis on the chosen ADL/IADL or leisure activity. Use the following headings in your report to help organize your thoughts:
Activity Name
Environment
Materials
Fit to Client and Goals
Steps and Time Factors
Physical Demands
Sensory Demands
Perceptual Demands
Cognitive Demands
Social Demands
5. Identify one piece of homework related to the activity that you will assign to the client between treatment sessions.
6. In addition to what you outline above in the activity analysis, determine two ways that you can adapt/grade interventions directed toward occupation and/or environment to further support engagement in occupational performance of the stated ADL/IADL or leisure activity.
7. Briefly describe how the adaptations you described in #6 (above) would impact your clients’ success with completing the activity.
