Assignment Description
This assignment requires you to write a report on enabling children to engage in play.  A child’s job is play.  Through play, children explore their world which contributes to development of physical, cognitive-perceptual, affective, and communication skills.  These skills serve as a foundation for performance of other occupations. When working in pediatrics, OTAs use play therapeutically in achieving various goals with children and adolescents. During treatment sessions, it is imperative to grade play based activities to meet the client’s functionalneeds.  It is as important to begin and end each treatment session with success for the client.

The objective of this project is for the students to understand the process of grading playbased activities to meet a goal. The students will select 2 different scenarios.  For each scenario selected (see below), the students will develop a single treatment session (30- 60 minutes), during which 4 various play based activities will be outlined to help the client achieve the stated goal. The activities must be age and developmentally appropriate for the child.
For this assignment, imagine that you are an OTA working in a children’s treatment centre, providing intervention for children both at the centre and in the child’s home. You are conducting theparticular sessions outlined below at the treatment centre, and will be providing the children’s parents with suggestions from the session to use at home.  Choose 2 scenarios from below that you would like to address.

A. John is a 3-year-old boy.  He walks short distances but fatigues easily.  He is having difficulty with core stability and postural control in play.  He is unable to adequately maintain sitting posture on a swing.  His cognitive and communication skills are age appropriate.

Increase John’s postural control so that he may engage in play activities. John’s goal is to play on the swing set with his friends in daycare.
B. Anne is a 5-year-old girl.  She prefers to play alone and does not initiate play with her peers.  She becomes very upset with transitions, often screaming and crying.  Her receptive language skills are age appropriate but she has difficulty using her words to express her emotions.

Increase Anne’s ability to engage in cooperative play.  Her parents’ goal is to have Anne initiate play with a friend.
C. Sam is an 8-year-old boy.  He does not show imagination or creativity in play (i.e., using objects in unconventional play).  Some of his classmates say he is ‘no fun’ to play with.  Sam has no difficulty understanding instructions but is hesitant to follow direction related to imaginary play.

Increase Sam’s ability to engage in pretend play.  Sam’s goal is to have more friends to play with in school at recess.

Keep in mind that for each scenario you select from above, you do not need to achieve the client’s goal during the particular treatment session you outline.  However, the activities you select must be play based and appropriate for working toward that goal.

Refer to Chapter 15 in your textbook for considerations for your paper.  Additional research is to be done to your discretion. The assignment steps are listed below.

This paper should be no more than 5 pages, double spaced, using 12 point font. Include a reference list (additional page). This assignment is to be completed in groups of 2-3 and is worth 20% of your final mark.

Assignment steps
1. Select 2 scenarios(from A, B, C) outlined above.  Steps 2 to7, outlined below, are to be followed for each scenario. Each activity you describe in the steps below must be play based, age and developmentally appropriate, and in keeping with the overall goal of treatment for the child.
2. Name and briefly explain one warm up activity that you feel the child will be successful with. This activity will gently prepare the client for the more challenging activities and will likely be conducted within 5 - 10 minutes.
3. Name and briefly explain 2 activities that are more challenging than the warm up activity.    Each activity should be slightly to moderately more challenging than the last, but not so challenging that the child feels frustrated and overwhelmed. Keep in mind grading and the ‘just right challenge’.
4. Name and briefly describe one cool down activity that you feel the child will be successful with. This activity will be less challenging than the activities outlined in step #3, and will likely be conducted within 5 - 10 minutes.
5. For each activity you described, outline a time frame. Take in to consideration age appropriate attention span. Furthermore, when determining the time frame for each activity, consider the energy involved in performing the task and ensure that participation will not over fatigue the child.  Your treatment session should be 30-60 minutes long.
6. For each activity you described, outline what you are doing in the play scenario (e.g., where are you positioned in relation to the child, how are you interacting with the child, what type of instructions are you providing, what is your role if you are role playing).
7. For each scenario you select, provide 2 specific strategies you can suggest to the child’s parents to use at home during play which will help meet the client’s goal.
