Question 2- Oxygen is an essential element in the human body. Answer the following: (400 words, 10 marks)

Q: What is normal oxygen saturation levels in a healthy person?
According to Peate & Nair (2017) the normal oxygen saturation level in healthy person is 95%-100%.
Q: Why must oxygen saturation be kept in homeostatic range?
A: As per Amerman (2019) in order to supply the oxygen demand to all the cells in the body the oxygen saturation level must be kept within the home static range. Below the range can result in oxygen deficiency and cellular death.

Q: Trace the pathway of oxygen delivery to cells in the body (commencing at the alveoli until it enters the cells).
A: The pathway that oxygen travels from the alveoli to the body cells requires the gas exchange, pulmonary gas exchange and tissue gas exchange. (Marieb & Hoen, 2019). First, the pulmonary ventilation takes place. Whereby, the air full of oxygen breathed in and it enters the alveoli. The alveoli are one cell thick which allows the efficient gas exchange. (Amerman, 2019). The author further elaborates that once the air/oxygen enters the alveoli the pulmonary gas exchange takes place. Hereby, the oxygen diffused into the blood stream by the process of simple diffusion with the help of partial pressure via the surrounded capillaries. In addition, once the oxygen enters the pulmonary capillaries it binds up with the hemoglobin in the red blood cells and converts into oxyhemoglobin. Furthermore, according to Amerman (2019), the oxygenated blood then is returned to the left side of the heart via pulmonary vein. Here, the pulmonary vein pumps the oxygenated blood to the left atrium. From the left atrium the oxygenated blood travels to the left ventricle via mitral valve. The blood again pumped into the aorta through the aortic valve. At last, the aorta delivers the oxygenated blood to the systemic capillaries/tissues whereby the tissue gas exchange happens. Hereby, oxygen diffuses from the blood stream by the process of simple diffusion into the cells by driven gradient of partial pressure. Finally, the deoxygenated blood is pumped out to the right side of heart and then pumped out of the heart into the lungs. Thus, repeating the whole process again. (Amerman, 2019).
Q: How does the knowledge of this process relate to nursing/midwifery practice when measuring a patient’s oxygen saturation?
A: the information allows a nurse to identify the patients baseline oxygen saturation level immediately. If the level is below the range, they can help prevent the consequences.
Question 3. Cardiovascular disease is a national health priority effecting many Australians. A healthy eating pattern can contribute to maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. An important part of this eating pattern is to replace
saturated fats with unsaturated fats. (200 words, 5 marks)

A: The examples of two dietary sources of saturated fats are whole milk diary products, such as milk, cheese, butter, cream and egg yolks. (Pilgrim & Marcel, 2018)
Q: Describe the effect a diet high in saturated fats can have on the
structure and function of the cardiovascular system.
A: According to International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition (2018) – the chances of having coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, stoke and atherosclerosis is higher for the people who daily consume high saturated fats in their daily diets. Thus, high saturated fats in diet increases the bad cholesterol level which gets deposited into the arterial wall which accelerates the progress of atherosclerosis therefore greater risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease.

Q: Name two dietary sources of unsaturated fats
A: the two dietary sources of unsaturated fats are: avocados, nuts, and seeds such as almonds, peanuts and cashews. (Faltore and Massa, 2018)
Q: Describe the role unsaturated fats play in a healthy cardiovascular
system.
A: According to Grumman and Bender (2015), avocado is a good source of mono-unsaturated fat and a good source of fibre content. Thus, helps in reduction of cholesterol which decreases the risk of heart disease. Since it high source of fibre therefore, it helps in the control of blood sugar levels.
