Paediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Section 1:
Paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is an under diagnosed and under recognised condition, which if left untreated can have significant morbidity consequences.

Obstructive sleep apnoea is defined as the cessation of breathing despite continuing respiratory inhalation effort (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2001). It is characterized by loud snoring and recorded cessations of breathing.

In children, signs of obstructive sleep apnoea include habitual snoring, cognitive and behavioural problems (Spilsbury & Redline, 2008). Risk factors include prematurity, socioeconomic status, obesity, exposure to smoke, lymphoid hypertrophy and body and airway growth (Spilsbury & Redline, 2008). Symptoms for OSA include adenotonsillar hypertrophy, failure to thrive, hypertension, cor pulmonale, hyperactivity, aggressive behaviour, decreased attention span and reduced executive functioning (Arens, 2008; Owens, 2009; Spilsbury & Redline, 2008).
