Case Study - Panos (85 year-old man).
Panos migrated to Australia from Greece 55 years ago. He met his wife, Mary, in Australia. They were in a relationship for two years prior to getting married. They had been married for 50 years at the time of Mary's death nine months ago. Mary died suddenly at 80 years of age, having had a sudden collapse and heart attack at home. Panos and Mary had been very connected to the Australian Greek community for many years, but Panos hasn't felt able to attend any of the social events within the Greek community since Mary died. Panos has been living alone in his three bedroomed, double storey. Western Sydney home since his wife died. Although Panos does own his own home, he has been struggling to manage the house finances since Mary died, as she paid the bills and dealt with any of the official processes. Panos has two children. David, his son. is 48 years old. David is a paramedic, currently living in London, with his two teenage children. David and his children return to Sydney to see Panos every two years. Panos also has a daughter, Susan. 40 years old. Susan is a Managing Director of a large company in Sydney. Susan has three children, aged 25. 20 and 18 years old. Susan has been visiting her father in Western Sydney every month. Occasionally, Susan's children also visit Panos. Panos has high blood pressure, which has been treated by his general practitioner (GP). He has also been unsteady walking at times. Panos has been experiencing low mood, sadness and increased anxiety for two months. During the past month, he has also been experiencing early morning wakening at 4am and reduced appetite, resulting in a weight loss of 4 kg. He missed his most recent appointment with his doctor to reassess his blood pressure. During the last ten days, Panos reported an increasing sense of hopelessness, cannot see a future and wants to die to join his wife. His daughter reported Panos visited his wife's grave six times during the past two weeks. This is a significant change in behaviour, as Panos had been visiting her grave once a week. Panos has no mental health service history, although his daughter reported he did have a period of untreated depression when his father died when Panos was 30 years old.
