The literature review is worth 25% of your final grade (dot-point plan = 5% and final submission = 20%). It is expected that the reviews will be ofa high standard. Your reviews will be marked by the academic staff member that set the topic.

  • Strict word count: 2500 –3000 words (excluding reference list and in-text references). Marks will be deducted if the word-count is lower/beyond theselimits.
  • Only articles from peer-reviewed journals may be used as reference sources and atleast20 articles must be cited.•Where possible, original rather than review articles should beused.
  • The aims of the literature review are to analyse and critique recent literature in relation to your chosen topic. Therefore, it is strongly encouraged that you cite predominantly recent journal articles within the last 5-10 years as research is constantly evolving and changes rapidly. Please refer to the individual literature review summaries for guidance on areas to focus on for your research.
  • It is important to follow a clear and logical structure. Remain focused on the question and answer the question clearly. Throughout your literature review try and relate the discussion back to the initial question.
  • Begin the review with a clear introduction. You can even briefly discuss the format of the literature review to follow.
  • Ensure that the body of the literature review is broken into a series of paragraphs, the use of subtitles is strongly encouraged. Paragraphs / subtitles are the building blocks of your review, so it is important that there is a cohesive and logical flow between paragraphs. It is important to identify, discuss and compare key issues raised in sources and highlight deficiencies of knowledge evident in the research topic if there are any.
  • End your review with a concluding summary paragraph but also addresses the initial question. Your conclusion should be supported by the facts that you have presented in the body of the review. Note that there may not be a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer. You may also wish to propose future directions for research.
  • Reference appropriately using the Harvard system. Check spelling and punctuation so that your review is free of typographical and grammatical errors.
  •

Referencing in the assignment

  • We strongly urge all students to use a reference manager to build and manage their references.
  • Answers should be written in your own words to demonstrate your personal understanding and should be referenced where appropriate. It is not appropriate to use sentences straight from a journal article, or even to simply re-organise a sentence or change a few words from information in a journal article. Information obtained from reference sources should be extensively rewritten to demonstrate your understanding of the topic.
  • Appropriate referencing is important for academic integrity. It is important that the contribution of the work of others is acknowledged, it provides evidence to support your argument and it provides evidence that you are not plagiarising. The reader should be able to consult the exact source of your information. You should ensure that your reference includes the information that you are stating it contains.
  • Each reference must be indicated in (i) within the text and (ii) in a reference list at the end of the assignment.
  • When referencing: Use the Harvard style, by citing the first author (followed by et al if there are also others) and the year of publication in the text.
  • As the final page of your assignment, create a “reference list” and list the references in alphabetical order by first-author. Mark penalties may be applied for inappropriate referencing in assignments and for not following these guidelines. This may include being awarded 0 marks for the assignment.
