Case Study Student on placement at Centrelink You are doing your final FE2 placement at Centrelink supervised by senior social worker Roger. Today you and Roger have facilitated a meeting with ‘service user’ Ahmed. His sister Mona came along. Ahmed says he is reluctant to come to Centrelink and ask for benefits because that is shameful in his community, however, claims he can’t live at home anymore (house burnt down), has no money and wants to claim Youth Allowance (out of home rate) and if possible, get an emergency payment. Roger asks for evidence supporting the claim for emergency payment. Ahmed says the hospital social worker could back up the story and gives the name and hospital details. Roger asks if there are any other services involved in the situation, at which point Ahmed gets upset, and says his own life is his business, “f** you all” and walks out. Mona says “you might try his youth parole officer.” After Mona and Ahmed leave, Roger turns around to you and says “I think this guy is hiding something. We can give him out of home allowance but not sure about emergency payment… Can you please ring the hospital social worker?” What are the ethical issues for the student?
