Introduction

In this exercise you will make a web application that collects web statistics and a web application for visualizing the collected statistics. We will use the following definitions from a blog post by Amber Callan of Leap Clixx:

• Page views:

“The number of times a page was loaded or reloaded by a visitor”. In our terms this means every time the python script of a page is executed as response to an HTTP Request.

• Unique page views:

“The number of different pages a given visitor viewed during a session” (for definition of “session”, see below).

• Session:

“A period of thirty minutes that begins after a visitor first enters a site”. You can think of a “site” as a collection of pages that belong together or that are part of the same web application. Note that this definition differs from the notion of sessions we have used in the lectures.

• Visit:

“Happen only when a person arrives at your site from an outside source”. Even though it is not exactly the same, we will treat visits as the sessions from the lectures (in other words the “lifespan” of a session cookie).

Assignment/Requirement:

Your job will be to collect the data necessary to produce statistics of page views, unique page views, sessions and visits in accordance to the definitions above. In that, you should use session cookies to track visits and permanent cookies to track visitors. In addition you will produce visualizations of the web statistics. The main parts of the blog post is reproduced as Appendix

Part 1: 

Database 

Create a database webstat for the collection of the data to produce web statistics as described above. The database needs to at least log visitor ids, visit ids, page names and time stamps.

Document the database as both an ER diagram and as SQL CREATE statements.

Describe the rationale of your database (how will it work, what decisions did you make).
