Assessment 3: Personal Reflection
For the final assessment each student is required to submit a personal reflection on the short film
"DesignFutures: Eva FranchiGilabert", freely available on Vimeo and Youtube:
Explore, analyse and reflect upon the film. Provide your observations and understanding of what theselected themes and the content of her talk means to you and how it makes you think about the role ofarchitecture and architects in society.
To assist you in your analysis and reflection choose a building that youthink best expresses the themes youhave identified from the film - elaborate upon those themes and reflect upon their relationship to thebuilding, you and the film.
The selected project must be different to those covered during site visits.
Your personal reflection should also demonstrate the development of your thinking and analytical skills andbe written from a perspective that expresses your own critical evaluation.
Your personal reflection must:
• be around 1000 words in length
• be fully written from your own perspective;
• provide at least one image to illustrate and describe the qualities of your chosen building withreference to the themes and topic within the film that you are discussing. An image which you havealtered in some way (ie through collage, drawing into/over, applying filters etc) is preferred;
• include a footnote (100 words) that explains and summarises the image and its construction;
• be well designed (see articles in journals and magazines - this is not a scientific report), A3 landscape format incolour; and
• a single pdf document to be submitted to Turnitin.
Please note: Should you find a need to consult various texts to broaden your understanding of the selected topic, you can do so, but please make sure that you reference these texts both in-text and in your reference list. Students who borrow ideas and sentences, either wholly or in part, from the text/s (be it directly, i.e. quotes or slightly rewarding these, i.e. paraphrasing too closely) without properly in- text referencing will be deemed to have plagiarised and will be reported. Also, please note that the emphasis is on your opinion and understanding of the topic so use the external sources sparingly. Please note that failure to observe the word count for this assignment will result in mark penalties.
Personal Reflection Marking Criteria
• Demonstrated understanding of the research topic
• Level of critical reflection and evaluation
• Clarity and quality of writing style
• Quality of visual recordings (diagrams and drawings)– it should be determinable from your diagrams and drawings that you have been to site and that you have produced these visual recordings whilst on site and not from photographs
