The Talking Resume Speech Assignment
In this speech, you Will accentuate your personal skills or qualities to fit a prospective employer's needs. The object is to pretend you are trying to get a job in a field of your choice, and you are essentially persuading the employer to hire you. To do this, you will present yourself and your qualifications in a credible, organized, and professional manner. The presentation will be a combination of informative and persuasive speaking. The idea is not to repeat what would be on your resume, but to enhance your resume with personal statements about career expectations, assets you can contribute to the job you are seeking, and specific experiences you have gained and can illustrate, all of which may be made up completely. In other words, sell yourself.
Guidelines:
• You will need a standard introduction, body, and conclusion
•The introduction should have an attention-getter, a "thesis" that states the position you are applying for and the name of the company/place where you are applying, and a "preview" statement that lists what the major points you will discuss are (for example, My educational background and experiences in the field make me an asset to your company).
• The body should include, in any order, the following:
a.educational background
b.career-related experiences (illustrate this with specific examples of your skills and valuable personal experiences—again, this can be made up)
c.other experience that makes you qualified
d.the rationale for selecting the company/ place of employment
e.assets or contributions you can offer above other candidates
• the conclusion should restate your main points and have a motivational statement to suggest hiring as your closing line
NOW, that I have told you about my educational background, I am going to further explain my various job experiences as a trooper and investigator. First off, I want to tell you why I want to work for the FBI. The FBI is such a prestige organization that I'd be honored to work for. My work has always been for local and state departments so now I want to work for a national government organization. I started off as a state trooper after receiving my associate's degree from SCCC. I had to endure intensive training at the police academy in Albany, NY but it was all worth it. I am very reliable so you won't have to worry about me being late or not showing up. Just ask any of my past employers and they will tell you the same thing. For instance, while working as a state trooper we had a critical situation develop on the NYS thruway, which required backup. I was off that day but as soon as I got the call, I was at the scene within 10 minutes. A taxi cab had been pulled over for a routine stop in search of a suspected criminal. Within seconds, the passenger in the back of the cab began firing at the patrolling officer. I'm going to show you a short clip of the scene that was filmed by CNN. As a state trooper, I patrolled the NYS thruway thousands of times and helped several local police forces when they
needed help from larger police departments. My job was always exciting and kept me on top of my toes. I can work in a very stressed environment and keep up with the pace, even under exigent circumstances which I faced all the time with being a trooper. Within two years of being a trooper, I was promoted to an investigator based on
my education and work ethics. I certainly had the intelligence and I was very motivated to become a Clime scene investigator. As an investigator for the state, I began my work at local crime scenes but eventually started investigating national crimes after continued success. I became so good at it and solved 98% of the crimes that I was then asked to investigate international crimes in countries such as England, France, and Germany. I also have strong communication skills which helped me in other countries, especially when dealing with their local police forces. Like I previously mentioned, I investigated
popular crimes such as the BTK murders and criminals like Ted Bundy and Charles Manson. One famous case I worked involved a little girl who disappeared at the age of 8. There was no evidence and no suspects. I had nothing to go on. But within a few years, my department and I discovered her living with her kidnapper alive and well, which was rare for a case like that. All of my employers will tell you that I am a conscientious hard worker and I never give up. For every case I work on, I won't give up until I find the person. My investigative work is very extensive and you've only heard a minute part of it. Please, take me into consideration for the job as I have both the experience and the education!
In these past few minutes, I hope I have convinced you to give me the position of an FBI officer. first, I talked to you about the expensive education background that clearly qualifies me for the job. Second, I discussed my past job experiences and pointed out some key virtues I hold The FBI position is something I've wanted for so long and now that I have the opportunity to get it, I hope you can only open the window of opportunity for me. Let me ask you this, do you want someone new to the field who only has little experience or would you want someone like me with the education and ex rience to fully fulfill the position?
I'm sure all of you have heard of criminals such as the BTK killer, Timothy McVeigh, Ted Bundy, Dennis Rader, and Charles Manson but what you don't know is that I've investigated all of them. At only have I investigated both national and international crimes, but I've also been a uniform officer for several years, patrolling both on foot and Off. I am the perfect candidate for the field station of an FBI officer and today I am going to convince you why I should get the position. First, I will talk to you about my educational background. Second, I will discuss my past experiences in the criminal justice field while attributing my qualities and virtues My educational background extends from high school all the way to graduate school. I graduated from Mohonasen High School with an honors diploma in 2007. After high school, I attended SCCC with a major in criminal justice and graduated in December of 2009 with an associate's degree. While attending SCCC, I also worked part-time at a local supermarket as a shift supervisor and I participated in BMX racing and competitive cheerleading, so you can see that I was active yet well-balanced. I went on to get my bachelor's degree in criminal justice & investigation in 2011 from the University of New Haven. I continued there in 2011 to get my master's degree in criminal justice with a minor in forensic science and forensic computer investigation. While attending the University of New Haven, I received several awards for my academics such as receiving the highest GPA and I was consistently on the dean's list. I also held several internships at the FBI office in CT as well as Homeland Security and local police headquarters. Two years later, I earned my Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. As you can see, I have earned several degrees and my education is extensive and clearly qualifies me for the FBI officer position.
