Objective

To appraise strategic issues for a health organisation, using analytic tools and approaches.

Description

Your role

You have been asked to identify strategic issues for a health organisation in a brief report. Your report will focus on a situational analysis of the organisation. The report must include a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) diagram, which is a tool for identifying the positive and negative, internal and external factors that affect an organisation. Use of SWOT analyses will be discussed during the course.

The organisation you select to analyse must be from the list above or you must negotiate with course staff to look at another health organisation with a publicly available strategic plan before the due date.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH SECTION

Description of the organisation 

• Describe the health organisation and its context. This section can be up to 200 words in length.
• You can draw from the organisation’s strategic document, as well as undertaking additional research. Sources should be cited using references.

SWOT analysis

• Fill out the table provided in the template below. Refer to the Module 2 lectures, tutorials and readings when considering how to undertake your SWOT analysis.
• You are not limited in the number of points you can include in each table cell (each quadrant), noting the overall word limit for this section. It is fine if the diagram extends over more than one page.
• References should be included within the SWOT diagram where appropriate.

Conclusions 

• Describe the two most important conclusions for the organisation based on your SWOT analysis. These should reflect the most significant implications and inferences of your analysis. They should reflect the content of your SWOT analysis, your additional knowledge, and research.
