PART A: Utilitarian Markets and Higher Pleasures
Michael Sandel addresses what he takes to be a morally troublesome state of affairs: we live in a time when virtually everything can be bought and sold, a time when market values have monopolized our lives. Traditionally, market values only attached themselves to material goods such as iron ore, sugar, and iPhones; but now it seems that everything is up for sale, including hunting endangered species like the black rhino and shooting a walrus for sport. Sandel’s concern is that, insofar as the utilitarian reasoning that underlies market mechanisms is Benthamite in nature and thereby recognizes no distinction between higher/lower pleasures, the markets in hunting black rhinos and shooting walruses, while successful in making some people better off and no one worse off, nevertheless promote morally questionable, if not repugnant, attitudes toward the value of wildlife.
Using either Sandel’s discussion of the black rhino OR the walrus,
(i) explain how the market provides an efficient, utilitarian solution that satisfies the preferences of all the parties involved. [5 marks]
A strong answer should briefly summarize the issue, identify the relevant parties, and accurately explain how the issue is resolved using market incentives.
Suggested length: 200 words (minimum)
(ii) explain what Sandel finds problematic about the (above) solution. How can Mill’s distinction between higher/lower pleasures and his “Socrates/pig” quote assist in explaining Sandel’s argument? [12 marks]
A strong answer should accurately explain Sandel’s criticism of the market solution to the issue and discuss the way higher/lower pleasures (which stem from preferences) correlate to the parties involved, and how Mill’s quote provides insight and support for Sandel’s view.
Suggested length: 300-350 words (minimum)
ANSWER BOTH (i) and (ii) above (using either the black rhino or the walrus)
Your answers should be as detailed as possible. Be prepared to expand on specific claims made by Sandel in order to clarify important points. You will be evaluated in accordance with the following criteria: (i) accuracy/comprehensiveness, (ii) clarity: organization, expression of ideas.
ANSWERS MUST BE WRITTEN IN YOUR OWN WORDS. If your answer resembles the original too closely (similar wording, follows similar sentence structure/pattern), it will receive a failing grade. Expand on the author’s points, include a little analysis, offer an example to illustrate major points. [see the mini PPt lesson on paraphrasing texts located in the Week 5 folder]

PART B: Matheny’s Defense of Animal Interests
ANSWER ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
(i) One common argument used to justify our current prejudices against nonhuman animals is that moral consideration of interests should only extend to those who possess certain levels of rationality, intelligence or language. Since animals lack such capacities, we are justified in treating their interests as less important than our own. Give a detailed account of Matheny’s response to this argument. [10 marks]
OR
(ii) One common argument used to justify our current prejudices against nonhuman animals is that, since animals are not members of the human species, we are morally justified in treating their interests as less important than our own.
