Description of the assignment
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) belongs to ginger family, which is extensively grown in Southeast Asia. Despite its use as a spice, it is also widely known for its role in medical treatments in China and India. The main bioactive component that contributes to its beneficial health properties is curcumin, a yellow colored lipophilic polyphenol. In recent years, curcumin has received wide attention from researchers for its therapeutic potential as anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant as well as anticancer effect. Nonetheless, its poor solubility in aqueous solution limited its medicinal use.
Solvent extraction is the most used method to extract curcumin from turmeric. A few organic solvents such as hexane, acetone, ethanol etc. have been studied by researchers to investigate their efficiencies in extracting curcumin. However, solvents such as acetone and ethanol are highly flammable due to low flash point. There will be a need to install extra layers of protection in plant which further leads to higher cost of operation. Because of this limitation, alternative solvents that have better safety feature and being highly selective towards curcumin should be identified.
Instead of performing experiment which involves trial and error method, Computer Aided Molecular Design technique is proposed to identify the optimal solvent.
Objectives
To identify the relevant physical and thermodynamic properties of potential solvent to be applied for this application
To design alternative solvents to extract curcumin using suitable design technique
To improve the designed solvents in terms safety, health, and environmental aspects.
