Background to the experiments
To understand electromagnetism it is important to build up a practical understanding of the relationship between magnetism and the way in which voltages and currents can be induced in circuits. You will investigate one of two methods of inducing a voltage in a coil:by moving a magnet near a coil by placing a coil near another coil which is producing a varying magnetic ?eld.
Both methods have numerous applications in science and technology.
This project will extend over two weeks. The ?rst week will concentrate on developing an understanding of electromagnetic induction, particularly the fundamental relationships between the voltage induced and the method of inducing it. Along the way, you will learn to use an oscilloscope to display and measure time-varying voltages.
The second week will involve developing an application of this knowledge to either:
a. build a revs/sec meter or
b. make a metal detector
