Diabetes refers to high levels of blood glucose, also known as blood sugar. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as hyperglycaemia during pregnancy. Piper et al., (2017) state that this type of diabetes develops during pregnancy and is one of the most common health problems among pregnant women in Australia. It usually occurs from 24th to 28th week of pregnancy. Piper et al., (2017) found that Glucose intolerance is an early stage of gestational diabetes in pregnant women and it affects 5-9 % of all birth. Research highlights some health challenges for Women diagnosed with gestational diabetes, are at risk of developing preeclampsia, and low blood sugar in their babies (Buelo et al., 2019). The mother and newborn may develop Type 2 diabetes later in life, and the infant is more likely to be overweight.

In patients with gestational diabetes mellitus, is lifestyle intervention more effective than a pharmacological approach in reducing the disease progression?
