Objectives
One of the aims of this exercise is to develop, implement and test ladder programs for different applications. A brief description of each application is given in the following sections. Your task is to develop programs which satisfy the requirements of the particular application. Along with the ladder program you must specify the application’s operation with the use of requested technique, e.g. flowchart, GRAFCET diagram, timing diagram, state diagram or truth table.
Additionally, your understanding of the principles interfacing computers with different transducers, actuators and processes will be assessed in Task: Instrumentation.
There are two sessions to complete these tasks followed up with a submission of a report documenting your work.

2. Background
The first two tasks to be completed are based on the Industrial Control Trainer shown in Figure 1. The trainer mimics a typical operation of automated systems using a conveyor belt, beam sensors, cylinder pistons and set of buttons and switches. More details on the hardware can be found in the handouts for laboratory session 1. All ladder programs should be written using the associated PLC simulator software.

 

The Task: Instrumentation is based on the material delivered during the lectures and tutorials concerning sensors, measurement errors and calibration procedures.

 

Task: Save Detected Part Height for Sorting
To complete this task, you must:

1. Identify inputs and outputs and devices needed to complete this task.
2. Create a timing diagram illustrating operation of this system.
3. Develop, implement, and test a ladder program according to specification.
Description:
A production process often requires the result of a logic operation, such as detecting a faulty part, to be saved for use at a later stage in the process. A ladder logic memory store can be used for this purpose.
Use the Programmable Logic Control simulator application to build and test a PLC program to sort parts by their height. Optical beam sensors will be used to distinguish short and tall parts. The height test result will be stored for later use when short parts will be rejected and pushed into a recycle bin. Refer to the simulator’s built-in Help if needed.

 

Task: Sorting
To complete this task, you must:

1. Identify inputs and outputs and devices needed to complete this task.
2. Create a flowchart diagram illustrating operation of this system.
3. Develop, implement, and test a ladder program according to specification.
Description:
A common requirement of an industrial process is to sort objects moving down a conveyor belt, for example, sorting fruit into different categories shown in Figure 3.

 

Task: Instrumentation
To complete this task, you must answer questions to the following problems:
Problem 1:

a) Sketch a block diagram to interface each of the following transducers with a computer:
• A LVDT
• A turbine flow meter
• An absolute optical encoder
Briefly explain the purpose of each block used.
b) Sketch a block diagram to interface a computer with each of the following actuators and control elements:
• A valve which controls flow
• A stepping motor
• An electronic switch
Briefly explain the purpose of each block used.
Problem 2:

a) Sketch and describe a block diagram of a hand-held digital temperature meter based on a thermocouple which measures temperature in the range from 0oC to 100oC.
b) Evaluate the relative quantisation error introduced by a 12-bit A/D converter which is used by this instrument.
c) Assume that the thermocouple has a relative measurement error of 1.1% and evaluate the relative error of the whole instrument.
d) Evaluate the absolute error of the instrument. Is this instrument accurate enough to measure the temperature absolute accuracy is 0.2oC?
