1.Both major political parties in Australia have a policy of mandatory detention for “unauthorized boat arrivals.” Outline the origins of this bi-partisan policy, and provide arguments either for or against its continuation. 

Tips for essay writing

• Directly answer the question that you have been asked, not one that you wish had been asked
• Go beyond simple description to actually provide some analysis of and evidence about the key issues canvassed in your essay. This requires developing an argument that seeks to persuade the reader
• It is fine, indeed essential, to express your own opinion about an issue, but avoid formulations like “I think,” “I believe,” In my opinion.” 
• Do not make assertions that such and such is the case, unless you support it with evidence and an argument or at least a plausible reference
• When writing, strive for clarity. Generally, shorter, punchier sentences will help here, rather than very long, unwieldy sentences with multiple clauses (i.e., multiple ideas/propositions separated by commas)
• Read back over your work and edit it for greater clarity, remembering that clear writing generally expresses clear thinking, and vice versa.      
• You may use subtitles, but use them sparingly in an essay of this length, and only use them if they make your argument clearer
• Make sure you provide a reference for ideas that are not your own. Give page numbers for direct quotes 
• You can just can use Harvard in-the-text referencing, or one of the footnoting referencing systems (Oxford, Chicago, APA), but use it correctly and use it consistently (i.e., use it throughout the essay, and don’t chop and change)
• Provide a reference list on a separate page after your conclusion, which only includes works that you have actually cited in the main body of the essay
• In an essay of this length, I would expect a reference list with at least 10-15 entries
• Proof read your essay thoroughly. There is nothing more irritating for a marker than spelling mistakes and sloppy grammar.
