Essay Questions: Utilise ONE of the Essay Questions below (and as indicated in the unit guide). N.B bear in mind that you cannot do the same question for your Essay as you did for the Briefing Paper i.e. if you chose to do one of the questions from Week 6 for your Briefing Paper, you cannot write an essay on the same question. You may make minor adjustments to the question you wish to address in your essay. However, you MUST seek prior approval from Dr Kim at least several weeks before the due date and indicate on the cover page of your essay that approval has been sought. While the essay questions are provided for you, you should demonstrate why this question is puzzling (based on your own understanding of the readings and research you have conducted) from the outset.
1. In what way is the globalisation of finance a political phenomenon requiring political analysis?

4. Do all countries take advantage of the ‘room to maneuver’ provided by multilateral rules equally; why have some countries had greater success in maneuvering than others?
5. Is deeper economic integration (e.g. through free trade) the path (out of poverty) to development? Are there good reasons for developing countries to embrace rather than reject economic openness?
6. Does the less developing world need better global governance (through for example, reform of the World Bank, IMF, and WTO) or national development strategy [read: capacity for industry policies] to climb the ladder of development?
7. What does the Sino-U.S Trade War tell you about the WTO’s role (or limitations) in global governance of trade and investment?
8. Is industry policy still possible for the developing countries of today; to what extent are the obstacles (international system level and/or domestic) to the pursuit of industrial development insurmountable?
9. Will national capitalist differences endure; what factors push towards or against convergence/divergence on the Anglo-American free market model?
10. How influential have neoliberal ideas been in the American state’s approach to industrial governance?
11. Do you agree or disagree with the statement that the developed countries are ‘kicking away the ladder’ of development for developing countries while carving out development space for themselves under multilateral trade and investment rules?
12. What can national efforts to transition to renewable energy-based economies contrasted with multilateral rules governing trade in renewables tell us about the potential for collective solutions to a collective problem?
13. How might state action facilitate (or even be a necessity) in driving national clean energy transitions?
14. Are the rise of new global power actors diminishing the state’s capacity to govern the economy or are coalitions of dominant states and national corporations threatening global governance?
