Assignment Task

Throughout the teaching period, you have examined a series of theoretical perspectives on international politics and how these relate to historical and contemporary case studies. In your work on Assignment 1, you have also developed your ability to present a reasoned argument drawing upon empirical evidence and literature. In this assignment, you will bring all of these skills and knowledge together to prepare an argumentative essay on one of the topics below.
This assignment asks you to prepare an argumentative essay based on one of the following questions.
Please answer ONE of the following essay questions:
1.Discuss the relevance of the categories used by Immanuel Wallerstein in World- Systems Analysis (core, semi-core, and periphery). Do they help us to understand global economic inequalities?
2.Has the state lost power in the context of globalisation? Discuss in relation to one of the key theories.
3.What are the divisions and tensions within the English School regarding the relationship between sovereignty and humanitarian intervention? Discuss in relation to the distinctions between the pluralist and solidarist camps.
4.Critically assess the claim by positivists that we can analyse and understand international politics ‘scientifically’.
5.Analyse one of the following issues from one of the theoretical perspectives you have studied in this unit (Liberal Internationalism, Classical Realism, Neorealism, Neoliberalism, The English School, Marxism or World Systems Analysis):
oClimate change
oPoverty
oThe invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Note that you cannot choose the same theory you have previously considered for Assignment 2.
Consider the following tips when preparing your essay:
•Begin by analysing the question carefully. Unpack its requirements. This will help you to determine how you structure the essay and your argument. Use this structure to plan your essay.
•Make sure you have a clear introductory paragraph that provides the general background to your topic and argument; a thesis statement in which you state your position (e.g. This essay argues that...); and an outline of the argument to follow (e.g. Firstly, X is discussed. Next, ...).
•What are the key terms that need to be defined and explained? You could devote one paragraph to clearly defining these terms.
•What evidence do you need to answer the question adequately? In most cases, the best way to do this is by examining a case study. Look at the additional resources below and learning materials to find more details about how to use case studies effectively to support an argument.
•What would be a good case to study? Can you find the evidence you need for this? It is important that you explicitly demonstrate the relevance of your case study to the argument you are building.
•Feel free to run the case study you choose to incorporate by your eLA if you are unsure.
