How do political or social events shape the people we become? For this paper, you will choose a person whom you admire, research the major and or minor political or social events (sports, music, film, places, political/current events) that occurred when that person was about your age, and write about how one event (or a couple smaller events) shaped the person he or she became. You will need to choose a person to whom you have access, and you will need to plan ahead to get your interview notes. Your paper should be three to four pages long and should explain clearly how you feel that the chosen event(s) shaped the interviewed person’s character.

Purpose 
To learn how to ask a substantive question and to pursue answers to it through appropriate research. To identify relevant sources and to draw conclusions based on sound evidence.

DIRECTIONS: 

1.Choose a person whom you admire, who is still alive, and who is at least five years older than you are. 
2. Figure out what year that person turned your age. 
3. Research major events that took place the year you have chosen. Online options might include.

a. For additional online sources, search “Chronologies” or “20th Century Chronologies” or similar phrases involving “timeline” on the library website. 
4. Make an annotated list of entries from your chronologies. What was the event about? Whom did it affect? 
5. Write an interview either via email or take notes on the phone or in person asking about what he or she remembers from that year. If he or she does not remember much, prompt them with your list. 
6. Make detailed notes from your interview. 
7. Research events of your choice further based on your interview. 
8. Complete deep revision assignments (outline, introduction, and conclusion). 
9. Compose your rough draft. 
10. Participate in a peer review and revise.
