Question: This assessment task is designed to help you prepare for the later major essay (see separate task description) by ensuring students have the referencing/citation skills needed for the major essay, and by giving you practice in critical analysis. Note - this task is NOT a draft or outline of the later major essay, it is a referencing and critical analysis assignment. There are two parts to this exercise: Part 1 Students need to find one of each of the following types of source relevant to their chosen major essay:

• A book with one or two authors
• A chapter in an edited book
• An academic, scholarly journal article
• An on-line newspaper article

1. Essay Question: Is Australia well-served by its current model of federalism? Students must provide details of these according to one of the two referencing systems as outlined in the School of Political Science and International Studies' Essay Guide (see section 3.4 of the ECP for the link). This includes providing all the information for each reference, in the correct order, with the correct spacing and punctation. Self-evidently, the Essay Guide is a critical tool for this task! Please place the references on a new page, at the end of the critical analysis. Part 2 Students also need to write an 1100 word critical analysis of the academic journal article found for Part 1 (references are not included in the word count). This analysis should be fully referenced using one of the referencing styles set out in the School& Essay Guide, to demonstrate an ability to apply it. Marks will be awarded for both the intellectual quality of the discussion and the referencing. Better answers will draw in works beyond the item specifically under discussion. The discussion should include:

• A brief summary of the article's central argument and research findings
• An assessment of the merits and limitations of the research methodology
• In what way is it a new contribution to political science (eg is it a whole new thoery? does it apply an existing theory to Australia for the first time? etc)
• Explain how it sheds light on Australian politics today
• Some comment on how compelling your find the article overall.

All your references, including those found for Part 1 should be provided in a single reference list at the end of the essay.  If youYou may include a separate bibliography for additional items you have used in the analysis. In the bibliography at the end, please first list the & Four required references& and then list the & Other references & you used (if applicable). NB. This exercise is premised on students having chosen their major essay topic and finding sources relating to it. Students are free to change their major essay topic once this first assignment is completed if they wish to do so.
