A few years ago, I was at a Popeyes Supplement store on University Avenue in Waterloo and was buying my usual supplements for my workouts, just another run to the store if you will. As I was approaching the shelf where my supplements were, two employees from the store approached me. I thought that they were going to ask me if I needed help with anything, just like the friendly staff usually does, but this time they literally cornered me (unintentionally) and started to ask me if I had tried the new creatine product in the store that all the pro-athletes were taking. I had said no, I am just here to pick up my usual supplements and I will be on my way. Then, they started rhyming off reasons why I should use it and purchase it right now. As I started to walk towards the counter, the two men told me that they would give me the product half price right there and then. That caught my attention and stopped me in my tracks.
They told me how it would benefit my workouts and I thought to myself, do I really need this product?
Can I afford this product? I ended up buying the product and returning it later that day. I use this example because it covers the main points of using the low-ball technique.

The persuasion technique used in my situation was the low-ball technique. The low-ball technique is when one makes an attractive initial offer to get a person to commit to an action, but then making the terms less favorable moving forward. The two gentlemen used this when they offered me half price right in front of me. The main reason I stuck around to hear the other beneficial reasons was because of the low-ball technique offer. They told me that I could get it for half price right then and there and I was inching closer and closer to purchasing it. I was persuaded because of the initial offer they gave me, but I also thought to myself do I honestly think it’s worth the money, even at half price? It is really easy to get caught up in the pricing bids especially for supplements as they are very expensive, which is why the low-ball technique worked on me.

There were a few lessons I learned from this experience. First, I wouldn’t get so caught up in the initial offer. Secondly, I would have shut the conversation down quicker, that way I don’t get to the point where I am debating on purchasing their product. I know in my head that I don’t need the product they are trying to sell but I still purchased their product anyways. My advice I would give to someone would be to stand your ground and remember that you do not have to pay them anything, you don’t owe them anything. Their job is to persuade you and trick you into buying their product. I would tell the “next person” to yell for help if they felt uncomfortable in the way that the two men approached me. I would tell them to approach the situation with caution because the human mind is really easy to trick and I found that out the hard way in this situation. Those are the lessons I learned from the situation and I now know how to handle it in the future.
