Introduction
In the Week 3 Tutorial, you may recall your tutor mentioning that the “Gratitude Awareness Activity”. This should assist you in your ability to complete the first Reflection Report. Following this, your tutor played the ‘365grateful.com’ video on Vimeo and asked you to notice one ‘overt aspect’ and one ‘subtle aspect’ in each of the photos displayed in the video followed by discussing these aspects within your groups. The reason for splitting the contents within each photo into two artificial categories was to encourage and allow you to practice critically engaging with the ‘things’ that an individual can be grateful for (i.e., ‘overt aspect’ = surface level analysis and ‘subtle aspect’ = deeper critical analysis). There are at least two reasons for why this is important.
Firstly, this specific style of critical analysis is relevant for anyone working as a mental health professional as a client may one day be referred to you/enlists your help due to their reduced capacity to notice the beneficial elements of their own life. Accordingly, being able to help your client notice the beneficial elements in their lives followed by critically illustrating the positive influences that the beneficial elements are having on that client’s life can improve and significantly impact the client’s overall subjective wellbeing. Secondly, positive psychology is not only a science; it is also an applied science and experimental learning is the process of learning by doing. Therefore, by asking you to engage in hands-on experiences which are followed by reflection, you should be better able to connect theories and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations. As such, the undergraduate classroom can act as an opportunity in which students can personally experience the interventions associated with this field.
Therefore, hopefully, you have written at least ten personal journal submissions over the past fourteen days and you are now able to appraise your journal submissions to identify some examples of both the overt and subtle aspects that you can be grateful for in your own life. Finally, you may have noticed that after the first seven days the daily gratitude tasks began to repeat—this was intentional and hopefully you were able to try each method at least once.
